Man seriously injured after jumping off Arrigoni Bridge in Middletown

A man suffered serious injuries after jumping from the Arrigoni Bridge in Middletown early Wednesday and onto the ground below.

Emergency crews responded to the area below the bridge at 9:18 a.m. when they received the report from a passing motorist that someone was seen plummeting down from the bridge and was believed to have entered the Connecticut River, according to Erik Costa, chief of the Middletown Police Department.

Costa said police and crews with the Middletown Fire Department used boats to search the area but could not find anyone. It was discovered shortly thereafter that the individual had not entered the water and was found in the area of Portland Street, according to Costa.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Costa said.

According to Costa, authorities believe the man jumped from the bridge. The incident remains under investigation.
