Man shot and killed near Norfolk’s Calvert Square

NORFOLK — A Thursday evening shooting near the Calvert Square neighborhood proved fatal for a 56-year-old man.

Officers in the area were within earshot of multiple shots fired at around 5:22 p.m. near the intersection of East Olney Road and Wide Street. A man, John L. Howard of Norfolk, was found near a residence’s address with a gunshot wound.

First responders took him to a hospital were he later died on account of his injuries, a Norfolk Police Department statement said.

No additional details, including the shooting’s motive or circumstances, have been released.

Another fatal shooting transpired in Norfolk on Wednesday morning, in the city’s Tanner’s Creek neighbor, around 5.5 miles from the site of Thursday’s shooting and less than a half mile from a middle school. It resulted in a death of a 26-year-old Virginia Beach man.

At Calvert Square, a public housing project that city officials have long sought to redevelop, two separate fatal shootings occurred days apart in July which claimed the lives of a 32-year-old man and a Pennsylvania woman.
