Manchester officer shoots suspect who allegedly opened fire at police during I-84 pursuit

One person was shot after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop in Manchester over the weekend and opening fire at police during a pursuit on Interstate 84.

The incident unfolded shortly after 1:40 a.m. on Saturday as an officer on routine patrol tried pulling over a driver in the area of 335 Center St., according to the Manchester Police Department.

The driver allegedly stopped initially before taking off, police said. Officers deployed stop sticks as the vehicle approached the I-84 West entrance ramp from West Middle Turnpike, according to police.

Police said the stop sticks slowed the vehicle down, but the driver was able to continue west on the highway where the individual allegedly began shooting at pursuing officers. A Manchester officer returned fire, shooting the vehicle and the driver, police said.

The driver stopped shortly thereafter and was given medical attention at the scene, according to police. The individual was then brought to an area hospital for additional treatment. Their condition was not immediately clear.

The shooting is being investigated by the Connecticut Office of the Inspector General. The office is required by law to release body or dashboard camera footage within 96 hours from when the incident occurred.
