HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Three-peat state champion Maury swept the top honors on the VHSL Class 5 All-State Football Team, with sophomore quarterback Dominick Everette named Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Isaiah Simmons chosen as Defensive Player of the Year and Dyrri McCain selected as Coach of the Year.
Everette produced 4,047 total yards and 58 touchdowns, passing for 3,513 and 46 scores and running for 533 and 11 TDs.
Simmons tallied 109 tackles, including for loss, 27 sacks, and recorded a safety. He made the first team for the second straight year after second-team selections as a freshman and sophomore.
McCain guided the Commodores to a 14-1 record, including a 26-7 win over Highland Springs in the title game.
Maury center Jaiden Hodge, offensive lineman Nyquan Harris, running back Tayshawn Branche and wide receivers Jahvon Wiggins and Elijah Moss-Williams joined Everette on the first-team offense. Linebacker Javonti Hughe and defensive backs Tajuan Pair and Matt Williams joined Simmons on the first-team defense. Wiggins also made the first team as a punt returner.
Other Hampton Roads players on the first team included Green Run offensive lineman Thomas Wilker, Bethel running back Amari Pryear, Nansemond River all-purpose player Tyrell Grant Jr., Warwick defensive lineman Chris Corbin, Indian River defensive lineman Corey Sanderlin, Salem linebacker Markus McCoy and King’s Fork linebacker Joshua Pittman.
Second-team selections included Green Run running back Charles Jackson, defensive lineman Kamren Johnson, linebacker Dezshawn Smith and defensive back Zaevion Cleveland, King’s Fork offensive lineman Alvin Holland, tight end Korion Key and kick returner Zy’Dar’Euys Wynn, Warwick offensive lineman Joan Rodriguez and linebacker Tracy Pope Jr., Indian River offensive lineman Corey Sanderlin, Kellam wide receiver Aaron Smith, Cox kicker Brycen Widhalm, Maury defensive lineman Joshua Thomas and Salem defensive lineman Izayiah Bray.

ODU hires Roberts
Old Dominion has hired Will Roberts as its fourth women’s soccer head coach in program history.
Roberts spent the past three seasons as Louisiana Monroe’s head coach, going 31-13-15. He was the Sun Belt Coach of the Year after guiding the team to the league’s regular-season title and a 13-3-4 mark.
Roberts hails from Denbigh, North Wales, and was a four-time All-American player at the University of Charleston.

William & Mary has named Kellie Catanach Johnson as its 11th head volleyball coach. She was the associate head coach at Duke, joining that staff as an assistant in 2019.
Norfolk State women’s basketball senior Ciara Bailey has been named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Christopher Newport men’s basketball junior Toa Hollenbeck (Grassfield High) has been selected as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Christopher Newport women’s basketball junior Jessica Dornak has been named the C2C Player of the Week.
Virginia women’s basketball junior Kymora Johnson has been chosen as the ACC Player of the Week.
Christopher Newport junior offensive lineman Andrew Belford has made the D3football.com All-America second team.
