A Miami Hurricanes linebacker was arrested Friday in connection to a crash in Largo that killed a woman and two children.
Adarius Hayes, 20, turned himself in to face vehicular homicide and reckless driving charges in connection to the May 10 crash that killed Gail Price, 78, Jabari Elijah Solomon, 10, and Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria, the Largo Police Department announced in a news release.
Hayes was maneuvering a Dodge Durango aggressively through traffic on Ridge Road and reached speeds of nearly 79 miles per hour in a 40-mph zone shortly before slamming into the side of Price’s Kia Soul as she tried to make a left turn onto Orange View Drive, police said.
“The investigation concluded that Adarius Hayes’ egregious speed, aggressive and reckless lane changes, and complete disregard for surrounding traffic conditions demonstrated a willful and deliberate disregard for the safety of others, constituting reckless driving,“ the release said. ”These actions directly led to the tragic deaths of the three victims.”
Another passenger in the Kia, 58-year-old Herbert Riveria, 58, was seriously injured but survived the crash.
Hayes was a four-star recruit coming out of Largo High and picked Miami after drawing recruiting interest from Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State, among others.
He played in 12 games as a true freshman for Miami last season, mostly on special teams.
