Miami vs. Notre Dame predictions: Will No. 10 UM make statement against No. 6 Fighting Irish?

No. 10 Miami (0-0) vs. No. 6 Notre Dame (0-0), Sunday, 7:30, ABC

Latest line: Notre Dame is favored by 2 1/2 points

The No. 10 Hurricanes face 2024 national runner-up No. 6 Notre Dame at a potentially vulnerable time; the Fighting Irish are starting quarterback C.J. Carr in his first college game. It will be a hostile environment for Carr, but Notre Dame can turn to preseason All-American running back Jeremiyah Love. New Miami quarterback Carson Beck has much more experience — and has played in numerous big games. But UM’s receiver group is unproven, as well, and it will have to face top corners like Leonard Moore and Christian Gray. This likely will be a low-scoring game, won in the trenches. Notre Dame probably has the slight advantage.

Miami plays at home in front of a raucus crowd against a young quarterback on national TV — which all point to a Hurricanes victory. Hard Rock Stadium might not be loud for a random ACC game in October. Opening night against Notre Dame is when the big-event town shines. Mario Cristobal has a talented roster to go with his national title hopes and now they’re big-game hunting.

The Hurricanes have more questions than answers entering the season. How will Carson Beck integrate into Miami’s overhauled offense? Who is going to step up in the receiver room? Is the defense actually vastly improved under new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman? Notre Dame has to answer some questions as well. Redshirt freshman quarterback C.J. Carr is making his first career start in a tough road environment. But the Fighting Irish can fall back on preseason All-American running back Jeremiyah Love and talented defenders like Leonard Moore and Adon Shuler.
