Middletown Public Schools superintendent under scrutiny following DUI charge in Florida

The superintendent of Middletown Public Schools is under scrutiny following his arrest in Florida over the summer on driving under the influence charges.

Alberto Vázquez Matos, 51, was also accused of having a driver’s license in both Florida and Connecticut when he was issued a citation on July 29, according to Hillsborough County Clerk of Courts records.

Records show he was given the citation at 11:25 p.m. by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office after he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. The citation says the refusal would lead to Matos’ driver’s license being suspended for a year.

According to the clerk records, Matos has pleaded not guilty. Records also show he had a scheduled court hearing last week but that he requested a new date.

The Middletown Board of Education was expected to meet on Thursday for a special meeting to discuss Matos’ employment with the district. According to the agenda, school officials were expected to take “possible action” following an anticipated executive session.

“The Middletown Public Schools district does not comment on individual personnel matters,” a spokesperson for the district said ahead of the meeting.

Matos’ attorney did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Matos has been with the school district since 2021 and served as the acting superintendent before he was appointed the role permanently in 2022.
