Moped rider struck by minivan in West Haven has died, police say

A moped rider seriously injured when he was hit by a minivan last week in West Haven has died, police said Monday.

Police learned on Monday morning that the scooter rider, a 24-year-old New Haven man, had died from injuries he suffered in the crash on Oct. 21, according to Sgt. Scott Allard of the West Haven Police Department.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

According to Allard, the crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the Forest Road and Derby Avenue intersection where first responders discovered that the moped rider had been thrown from the bike and was lying in the road near the curb. He was given CPR by a passerby and taken to an area hospital with serious head injuries, Allard said.

According to Allard, a preliminary investigation found that the moped rider was headed east on Derby Avenue as he approached the intersection of Forest Road. The driver of a minivan who was heading west on Derby Avenue allegedly attempted to turn left onto Forest Road through a red light and struck the moped, according to Allard.

The driver of the minivan remained at the scene.

The crash is still being investigated.
