Traffic patterns around Route 309’s interchange with Tilghman Street in South Whitehall Township will change Monday as part of the continuing reconstruction project.
PennDOT said access to Tilghman Street eastbound and westbound from Route 309 northbound will be from the same ramp. Traffic to Tilghman Street westbound will have to make a left turn at a a traffic light, while eastbound traffic will merge. This configuration will be permanent.
Tilghman Street eastbound will be reduced to a single lane between Hausman and Parkway roads. In addition, left turn movements from Tilghman Street to Parkway Road will be restricted. Tilghman Street traffic wishing to access Parkway Road will be detoured on Springhouse Road. PennDOT said this pattern could be in effect for several months.
Left turn movements from Tilghman Street eastbound to Hausman Road will also be restricted. Tilghman Street eastbound traffic wishing to access Hausman Road will be detoured on Broadway. This pattern could also be in effect for several months, according to PennDOT.
Work on the new traffic patterns will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday and continue through 6 a.m. Monday, PennDOT said.
The closure of the Route 309 south ramp to Tilghman Street east that went into effect Aug. 19 will remain in place until approximately Sept. 1, 2026.
For the duration of the project, there will be lane restrictions on Tilghman Street between 40th Street and just west of Hausman Road. Restrictions are anticipated between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. weekdays and anytime on weekends.
There will be future times when Broadway will be closed, and there may also be off-peak times when lanes may be restricted on Route 309. Advance notice will be provided whenever traffic patterns change.
The $86.4 million project is expected to be completed in March 2030.
