Motorcyclist seriously hurt in East Haven crash that left one other person injured

A motorcyclist was seriously injured during a crash involving another vehicle in East Haven on Monday.

The collision occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. in the area of Coe Avenue and Austin Avenue, according to Capt. Joseph Murgo of the East Haven Police Department.

Murgo said the motorcyclist was traveling “at a high rate of speed” when the bike collided with a driver who was turning onto Austin Avenue. The motorcyclist suffered serious head and leg injuries and was treated at the scene by medics with the East Haven Fire Department before being taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, according to Murgo.

The driver who was involved remained at the scene and was cooperative, Murgo said.

According to Murgo, investigators reviewed video in the area and took witness statements and believe the motorcyclist was heading north on Coe Avenue going faster than the 25 mph speed limit. Witnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, allegedly traveling quickly, while passing a driver who was also heading north on Coe Avenue in the area of Austin Avenue, Murgo said. The motorcycle then collided with a vehicle turning left onto Austin Avenue from Coe Avenue, according to Murgo.

The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries, Murgo said. They were treated at Yale New Haven Hospital and have since been released.

Coe Avenue was shut down for several hours while the South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit’s Regional Accident Reconstruction Team was at the scene investigating. The crash remains under investigation.
