Multiple people were displaced following a fire at a three-story apartment building in West Hartford on Sunday.
Firefighters responded to the building at 144 Oakwood Ave. at 5:24 p.m. on reports of a fire on the third floor and smoke and fire in the rear of the building, according to Deputy Chief Adam Pacheco of the West Hartford Fire Department.
The first crews on scene arrived in minutes and reported seeing heavy smoke and fire, which prompted a response from additional units and mutual aid to provide station coverage, Pacheco said.
Crews stretched fire attack lines into the rear of the building and up to the fire in a third-floor apartment, according to Pacheco. The primary attack line was able to knock down the bulk of the fire.
Pacheco said firefighters found that no one was in the apartment. Additional crews searched the rest of the building to determine if the fire had extended into neighboring units.
According to Pacheco, overhaul efforts were concentrated on the third floor. Some other units sustained minor damage.
The fire was considered under control just after 6 p.m., Pacheco said.
No injuries were reported.
The apartment where the fire started was deemed uninhabitable from the fire, smoke and water damage, Pacheco said. The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced occupants.
The West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office responded to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.
According to Pacheco, firefighters were assisted by the West Hartford Police Department as well as the UConn, Hartford and Newington Fire Departments.
