The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be reopening N.C. 12 on the north end of Ocracoke at 5 p.m., according to a press release from the department. The highway closure began the evening of Aug. 20 after flooding from Hurricane Erin.
Vehicle ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke islands will resume at 5 p.m.
The schedule Monday night will run:
From Hatteras: 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 11 p.m. and midnight
From Ocracoke: 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 9 p.m., 9:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and midnight
The Hatteras ferry route will run its full summer schedule between Hatteras and Ocracoke starting Tuesday.
This is the final ferry route to resume service and last section of N.C. 12 to reopen since flooding from Hurricane Erin caused closures. Drivers should be aware some sections of the highway have water and a thin layer of sand still, according to the NCDOT.
