No. 20 CNU improves to 6-0-2

Christopher Newport (6-0-2), ranked 20th in Division III and coming off Friday’s victory over No. 4 Trinity, completed a 2-0 Texas trip by shutting out homestanding Hardin-Simmons 2-0 in Abilene on goals by a pair of juniors from Kecoughtan High: Joe Summerfield in the 37th minute and Colin Skwirut in the 56th. It was the first goal of the season for both.

Tribe captures CAA tie

William & Mary (0-4-3, 0-2-1) gained its first point of Coastal Athletic Association play with a 1-1 tie against Elon (5-0-2, 2-0-1).The Phoenix went ahead on Martin Kozak’s goal in the 50th minute, but the Tribe’s Sam Delgado netted a penalty kick in the 69th.

Va. Wesleyan shuts out Saint Mary’s

Virginia Wesleyan (5-1-1) beat Saint Mary’s 4-0 in Maryland behind goals from Shyenne Diaz, Kaylyn Seitz, Alexis Miller and Charlotte Gantt. The Marlins outshot the Seahawks 28-3.

Tribe earn tie

William & Mary (2-4-4, 0-0-2) recovered for a 1-1 Coastal Athletic Association draw at Towson (3-2-4, 1-0-1).

Kale’a Perry put the Tigers on top in the fifth minute, but in the 37th, W&M’s Brooke Oswald capitalized on a Towson turnover to find freshman Ellie Leffler, who scored her first college goal from the box. Tribe goalkeeper Gwen Doughty made three saves, including a penalty kick in the 21st minute.

Drexel (2-2-7, 1-0-1 CAA) posted a 2-0 shutout of Hampton (5-5-1, 0-2) in Philadelphia, where Annie Clapp assisted Jess Castorina’s goal in the 10th minute and scored herself in the 83rd. HU’s Avery John made five saves.

ODU stops slide by beating Wolfpack

Old Dominion (3-8) outlasted North Carolina State 3-2 (25-22, 12-25, 20-25, 28-26, 15-13) at Siegel Center in Richmond, ending a three-match losing streak and dropping the Wolfpack to 7-3. ODU saved a match point at 23-24 in the fourth set.

With the fifth set tied at 13, Kyra Hampton and Elisa Maggi scored back-to-back kills to spark ODU’s celebration.

Katie Rakoski and Bryanna Jones had 18 kills apiece to lead ODU, and Maggi added 14. Hampton set a career high with 42 assists and added 16 digs for her first college double-double.

The Monarchs were coming off four-set losses to Villanova, VCU and Wake Forest, but they surged back in their final match before Sun Belt competition. It was the third victory by ODU over a Power Four conference opponent — one in each of the last three years.

James Madison swept W&M 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-23) at the Erie Insurance Invitational in Harrisonburg. It was the fourth straight victory for the Dukes (7-5) as tournament MVP Kennedy Louisell had 11 kills and Grace Wenrich had 25 assists. Katherine Arnason led the Tribe (5-6) with 10 kills.

No. 23 VWU improves to 14-0

Virginia Wesleyan (14-0, 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference), ranked 23rd in Division III, won 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17) at Averett (2-9, 0-3) in Danville. Hannah Smith and Breana Brooks had 13 kills each, and Niya Nash had 45 assists and nine digs.

Christopher Newport (6-5) beat Nazareth 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) at Juniata’s tournament in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. The Captains hit .420, their best percentage in 10 years, as Samantha Dorn had 15 kills. CNU’s Alyssa Dozier made the all-tourney team.

Regent (8-3) swept fellow Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference member Johnson & Wales-Charlotte 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) behind Erin Saunders’ 14 kills and Denbigh Baptist alumna Rylee Stewart’s 34 assists.

Gloucester alum scores as Longwood beats W&M

Channy Johnson, a junior from Gloucester High who transferred to Longwood from Saint Joseph’s, scored in the third quarter to lead the Lancers past William & Mary 1-0 in Farmville.

Christopher Newport (7-0), ranked an all-time-high No. 2 in the Division III coaches’ poll, overcame Messiah of Pennsylvania 1-0 Saturday in an overtime shootout in Fredericksburg.

Kelly Via’s second goal of the shootout turned out to be the game-winner. Lily Kerr made six saves during the 80 minutes of normal play and a school-record-tying four against the Falcons (2-4) in the shootout. CNU outshot Messiah 28-12.

Host Virginia Wesleyan shut out Wilson 5-0 as DJ Holsclaw made four saves. Kyndra Peyton scored twice for VWU, while Hickory High alumna Kellyn McCloud had a goal and an assist.

Sydney Raguini, a James Madison freshman from Princess Anne High in Virginia Beach, scored her first college point with an assist as the Dukes (6-3) upset No. 8 Michigan 3-1 in Ann Arbor, handing the Wolveirnes their first home defeat of the season.

Madelief Molier scored a hat trick for JMU, which got a career-high 12 saves from goalkeeper Molly Schreiner. The Dukes won despite being outshot 29-10 and trailing 15-3 in penalty corners.
