NCAA denies UVA QB Chandler Morris a 7th year of eligibility

The NCAA denied Virginia starting quarterback Chandler Morris a seventh year of eligibility after he took the Cavaliers to their first 11-victory season in his first season with the Cavaliers. His father, Chad Morris, said they will “exhaust all options” to appeal.

On the plus side for the Cavaliers, they gained a commitment from UAB transfer running back Solomon Beebe. The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder’s 1,222 all-purpose yards this past fall were sixth-most in the American Conference.

He rushed for 338 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 6 yards per carry. He made 31 receptions for 284 yards, and His 26.1 yards per kickoff return were 13th-most in the FBS in 2025.

Also, former Georgia State safety Jaylen Jones signed with UVA, he confirmed to the Charlottesville Daily Progress. This season, he received All-Sun Belt honorable mention after compiling 66 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, an interception, one pass breakup, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

COLLEGE INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

NSU women, men each take 14 top-10 finishes in Virginia Beach

The Norfolk State women’s team opened the indoor season with a strong showing at the VCU Ram Indoor Invite at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, registering 14 top-10 finishes.

The Spartans totaled six podium performances, highlighted by a sweep of the women’s pole vault.

Freshman Emma Svetiev claimed gold in the event by clearing 3.15 meters (about 10 feet, 4 inches), while Hunter Lexa finished second (2.70 meters) and Fabienne Renelus rounded out the podium with a third-place mark of 2.55.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Brooklyn Robinson won the preliminaries before finishing second in the finals in 8.38 seconds. She  added a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.69) after placing second in the prelims (7.63).

Freshman Jada Arrington earned a bronze medal in the 400 meters in 58.52 seconds.

The NSU men, meanwhile, also had 14 top-10 finishes, including five appearances on the podium.

The day was highlighted by a first-place finish from Lavontay Bond of 48.69 seconds in the 400 meters.

Norfolk State added a pair of runner-up finishes, with Landon Walker in the pole vault (4.20 meters, about 13 feet, 9 inches) and Atrell Williams in the shot put (16.39 meters). Julian Ward secured a bronze finish in the 300 (34.09), while Jaymes Saunders followed with a third-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles (7.95).

COLLEGE SWIMMING

Tribe teams dominate quad meet

William & Mary went unbeaten at its quad meet at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex.

The Tribe men beat Old Dominion 198-64, while the W&M women defeated ODU 222-40, East Carolina 208-86 and Richmond 211-83.

Lauren Tucker swam the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10 minutes, 0.02 seconds, the second-fastest women’s performance in W&M history. Men’s freshman Tyler Barritt moved to fourth all-time in the 1,000 free with a 9:21.72 clocking.

The Tribe women’s 200 medley relay of Julie Addison, Lindsay Juhlin, Lauren Klinefelter and Caroline Burgeston won in 1:40.15, the eighth-fastest time in W&M history.

W&M also won both 400 free relays, with the men in 3:01.26 and the women at 3:23.17.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

No. 7 Hokies stave off No. 14 Pitt

No. 7 Virginia Tech built a formidable early lead and held on to win 18-15 at No. 14 Pittsburgh.

Last-match pin lifts No. 9 Wolfpack past UVA

No. 9 North Carolina State (9-3) rallied past Virginia 19-17 in Raleigh in the ACC opener for both teams. The Cavaliers (8-4) jumped to an early lead and led through nine weight classes before a pin flipped the outcome.

UVA went ahead 14-3 behind victories by Rocco Hayes (125 pounds), Marlon Yarbrough (133), Gable Porter (141) and Colton Washleski (157), who is ranked 29th nationally in his weight class.

UVA’s final victory came at 197, where Steven Burrell Jr. upended 25th-ranked Patrick Brophy 11-8 to give the Cavaliers a 17-13 lead. But Wolfpack heavyweight Isaac Trumble, ranked second nationally, pinned Brenan Morgan in 3:57 for six points to lift NC State.
