New Britain football holds off Glastonbury in OT

NEW BRITAIN – The New Britain football team rallied from a double-digit first half deficit to beat Glastonbury in overtime, 28-22 Thursday night.

The win moved the Hurricanes to 5-1 on the season. Glastonbury fell to 3-3.

New Britain scored first in overtime when Jayden Allen had a 1-yard touchdown run and went up 28-22 and the Hurricanes’ defense made a goal line stand to keep Glastonbury from scoring to preserve the victory.

Glastonbury tied the score in last second of regulation on a 25-yard field goal by Thomas Pingel.

Glastonbury scored first with two field goals by Pingel – the first a 33-yarder with 5:47 left in the first quarter and the second a 34-yarder with 9:45 left in the second quarter and the Guardians led 6-0 in the first half.

Glastonbury scored its first touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Connor Finnerty with 2:33 left in the first half to take a 13-0 lead.

New Britain turned the ball over on downs with 37 seconds left in the half but the Hurricanes recovered a fumble on the Glastonbury 39 and drove downfield to score a touchdown on a pass from Billy Seymour to Todd Samuel. But officials said New Britain had an ineligible man downfield on the play and the touchdown was called back and Glastonbury went into the locker room with a 13-0 lead.

Dante Casdia led Glastonbury with 87 yards rushing in the first half.

New Britain opened the second half with a 50-yard touchdown run by quarterback Billy Seymour to cut Glastonbury’s lead to 13-7. And the Hurricanes scored quickly after that, with another Seymour 50-yard run and a subsequent 2-yard TD run by Jayden Allen to give New Britain a 14-13 lead with 5:52 left in the third quarter.

Glastonbury regained the lead in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Casdia, 19-14 but New Britain rallied and went up 22-19 on a 22-yard touchdown run by Seymour and a two-point conversion.
