NEW KENT — Relief could be in sight for New Kent residents who face congestion and accidents at a “traffic nightmare” intersection thanks to an $8.6 million roundabout project.
The New Kent County Board of Supervisors affirmed its commitment to funding the county’s share of the Route 249 and Dispatch Road roundabout in Quinton on Friday.
“We have already submitted a pre-application for revenue share to construct a multi-lane roundabout,” said Transportation Development Director Amy Inman.
“The improvements will achieve better efficiency from an operations and a safety perspective,” Inman said. The busy intersection lacks a traffic signal, Inman told the board.
Inman said the project would cost $8.6 million, with the county paying half. The county has submitted a request to the Central Virginia Transportation Authority for $4.3 million to cover the county’s share of the funding. The money would be used to match Virginia Department of Transportation grant funding.
“There is a chance that our local funding will be covered through that regional funding,” Inman said.
Inman said VDOT indicated it could provide funding for the roundabout in 2027. “We have been able to advance the project much sooner than we originally thought going into this, so we are excited about that.”
Inman said the county contacted local landowners and the roundabout has been well-received.
“That’s good. That’s a traffic nightmare up there,” said board chair Thomas Evelyn.
