A man suspected of burglarizing multiple pro shops in New York has been accused of stealing more than $12,000 worth of golf clubs and bags from a golf club in Connecticut.
Matthew Berman, 41, of the Bronx, New York turned himself in last Thursday on charges of third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief and second-degree larceny, according to the Westport Police Department.
The charges stem from a burglary reported on Sept. 7, 2024, at the Longshore Golf Club at 260 Compo Road South. Police said they responded to the club around 6:30 a.m. and were told by staff that someone had broken in through a side door earlier in the morning.
The burglar allegedly stole just under $12,500 worth of golf clubs and bags, according to police.
Police said Berman was developed as a suspect after he was charged by authorities in New York in connection with similar pro shop burglaries. A detective was about to obtain a warrant for his arrest after linking him to the theft in Westport, police said.
Berman was held on a $100,000 bond after turning himself in and was expected to appear in Stamford Superior Court.
