No. 1 Landstown goes on the road to beat No. 6 Green Run at packed gym

VIRGINIA BEACH — Landstown wanted to get 2026 started the right way.

The Eagles, who lost twice over the Christmas break at the Border Classic in North Carolina, bounced back in a big way as they turned back No. 6 Green Run with a 53-44 road win in front of a sold-out crowd.

Sophomores Damien Robinson and Rashad Shaw combined for 29 points to give the Eagles the advantage in a series that has been evenly matched. Landstown now leads the series 16-15 since 2005.

“There was a lot of trash talking coming into this game,” said Robinson, who also finished with seven rebounds and two steals. “But we didn’t pay attention to the talk. We just came out here and played our hardest, executed and got the win.”

The Eagles (10-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, only to see Green Run cut the deficit to 14-12 after the first quarter.

They pushed their lead to 26-18 with 4:10 left, but watched Green Run cut into the deficit again as the Eagles took a 27-25 halftime lead.

The Stallions (8-2) were led by former Landstown star Zaevion Cleveland, who transferred to Green Run this school year. Cleveland, who signed to play football with Virginia Tech, finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Malik Gooden finished with 11 points.

Landstown dominated the second half as the Eagles built an 11-point lead and never looked back. They held Green Run to just five points in the fourth quarter. They also got help from Josiah Law, who finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

“It’s about coming in and doing our part,” said Shaw. “And that’s what we did.”

The Eagles — who lost to Queen’s Grant and Independence, ranked No. 13 and No. 20, respectively, in North Carolina by MaxPreps — have now won four of the last five meetings against Green Run, the defending Class 5 state champions.

“We just wanted to start 2026 off right,” Robinson said. “We haven’t played in two weeks, so we just wanted to get a fresh start, and get a win.”
