No. 11 Va. Peninsula Community College men await district basketball tournament

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Virginia Peninsula Community College’s men are competing this weekend in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Mid-Atlantic District 10 tourney at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, starting with a semifinal at 8:30 Friday night against the Community College of Allegheny County.

The winner will advance to the title game at 1 p.m. Sunday, whose winner will advance to the nationals in Herkimer, New York.

VPCC (21-6), ranked 11th nationally in its division, has won 11 consecutive games, including the Region 10 tourney last weekend at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina. In that event, VPCC beat Patrick & Henry CC 97-67 and then Sandhills 100-71.

Apprentice teams get No. 6 seeds at nationals

Both Apprentice School teams, who won the New South Athletic Conference tourneys last weekend, were seeded sixth for the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association nationals in Buffalo, New York.

The defending USCAA champion men will take on third-seeded Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse on Tuesday. The skills competition and banquet are Monday.

The Builders’ women, making their first national appearance since 2023, will play third-seeded Paul Quinn of Dallas on Tuesday.

COLLEGE SWIMMING AND DIVING

W&M women take early lead in CAA championship meet

The William & Mary women and UNC Wilmington men held the top spots after Wednesday, the opening day of the Coastal Athletic Association championship meet at the Hampton Aquaplex. The meet continues through Saturday.

W&M’s women posted 120 points, with three-time defending champ UNCW close behind with 116. Towson (110) held third in the field of eight.

In the men’s standings, four-time defending champion UNCW led with 133 points, while Towson was second with 113 and Drexel third with 100. Monmouth (58) and William & Mary (30) completed the five-team field.

The Tribe earned gold in the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay as Ellie Hunt, Flynn Truskett, Haley Lehman and Tess Lankford completed the race in 7:14.30.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

No. 18 UVA overcomes George Mason

Bella Cabral belted two home runs for the second consecutive game as No. 18 Virginia (14-1) won 9-6 over George Mason (5-5) in Charlottesville. Hannah Weismer homered for the second consecutive game as the Cavaliers extended their winning streak to 14 games, their longest run since 1988.

Poquoson’s Logan Pickford, hitting third in George Mason’s order, hit an RBI double and scored twice.

COLLEGE MEN’S TENNIS

CAA honors Tribe tandem

William & Mary’s Oliver Hague and Gur Trakhtenberg were selected as the CAA Men’s Doubles Team of the Week. They went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles, helping the Tribe defeat Navy 7-0 and Brown 4-2. They won 6-4 against the Midshipmen and 6-3 versus Brown, and Hague and Trakhtenberg were a combined 3-0 in singles in those matches.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S TENNIS

Shutout win puts Tribe at 6-2

William & Mary (6-2) tuned up for CAA play by shutting out Longwood 7-0 Wednesday at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Sia Chaudry, Tilda Larsson, Francesca Davis, Mira Kernagis, Rebeka Svabikova and Alexia Gonzalez-Galino won in singles after doubles victories by the tandems of Davis-Larsson at No. 1 and Emma Pell-Yaelle Vaissaud at 3.
