Bryant & Stratton won a showdown of ranked National Junior College Athletic Association Division II women’s basketball teams Sunday, edging Cleveland Community College of North Carolina 72-69.
Janiyaha Pickett had 21 points, Princess Anne High alumna Hailey Harris had 16 points and six rebounds and Sian Lewin from Manor High added 10 points for the 15th-ranked Bobcats, who improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in their conference by defeating 20th-ranked Cleveland.
No. 2 Texas 89, No. 13 Baylor 54: Preseason AP All-America forward Madison Booker had 27 points and eight rebounds as Texas beat turnover-plagued Baylor in a matchup of former conference rivals in Fort Worth.
Texas (12-0) took control with a 16-0 run in the first quarter as Baylor had six turnovers in just more than 4 1/2 minutes. The Bears finished with 30 turnovers, their most since Nov. 9, 2008.
Baylor leading scorer Taliah Scott was injured midway through the second quarter after turning her right foot on a move to the basket and didn’t return. Scott, Yuting Deng and Marcayla Johnson each had nine points for the Bears (10-2).
Longwood 67, Elon 66: Amor Harris sank a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to give the Lancers (8-4) a road triumph and her a game-high 18 points. The Phoenix (3-6), led by LaNae’ Corbett’s 17 points, missed four field-goal attempts that would’ve put them ahead after that.
Navy 82, Christopher Newport 47: In an exhibition for the Division III Captains but a regular-season game for the D-I Midshipmen, Navy (6-4) moved ahead 24-7 in the first quarter and breezed to a triumph in Annapolis, Maryland.
Navy’s Zanai Barnett-Gay had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Mia Wilson scored eight for the Captains.
No. 3 South Carolina 95, Penn State 55: Joyce Edwards had a career-high 29 points and four blocks for the host Gamecocks (10-1), who had just eight players and were missing 6-foot-6 starter Madina Okot and reserve freshman Agot Makeer. Ta’Niya Latson added 18 points.
Kiyomi McMiller led Penn State (6-4) with 22 points.
No. 19 Notre Dame 78, James Madison 65: Cassandre Prosper scored 24 points, Malaya Cowles added a season-high 17 and the Irish (8-2) beat the Dukes (8-4) in Harrisonburg.
Prosper hit 11 of 16 shots and added six rebounds and three assists. Cowles had five steals and four rebounds. Hannah Hidalgo added 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Notre Dame was up 56-36 with 3 1/2 minutes left in the third before JMU rallied. The Dukes’ 7-1 run to open the final period got them within 61-52. Lake Taylor High graduate Ashanti Barnes scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for JMU.
No. 22 Louisville 76, No. 12 North Carolina 66, OT: Laura Ziegler had 17 points, Elif Istanbulluoglu scored 16 and the Cardinals (10-3, 2-0 ACC) shut out the Tar Heels (9-3, 0-1) in overtime in Chapel Hill.
It was all Louisville in the extra period after Indya Nivar missed two free throws for UNC with 5 seconds left in regulation and Imari Berry hit the second of two foul shots for the Cardinals with less than a second remaining to force OT.
Virginia Tech 73, East Tennessee State 55: Carys Baker’s 22 points and eight rebounds paced the Hokies (9-3), who trailed 16-10 to the Buccaneers (4-8) after one quarter at Cassell Coliseum.
No. 8 TCU 89, Jacksonville 49: Olivia Miles had a triple-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Horned Frogs (11-0) against the Dolphins (7-2) in Fort Worth, Texas.
