The Christopher Newport express went to the Garden State and slowed no signs of slowing down, as the 15th-ranked Captains cruised past William Paterson 52-7 Saturday in Wayne, New Jersey.
Connor Barry, the NCAA Division III leader in pass efficiency, completed 17 of 18 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns as the Captains (7-0, 4-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference) hiked their winning streak to 12 games, counting last year. Backup Brandon Pena got plenty of action, going 7 of 11 for 46.
Receiver Colin Hart amassed 204 yards and two TDs on eight catches. Drevyon Tharrington, a freshman from Granby High, ran for 60 yards and a score on three carries. The Captains outgained the Pioneers 543-157, including 386-87 passing.
William Paterson dropped to 2-5, 1-3.
Apprentice wins by forfeit: Due to travel issues, Barber-Scotia didn’t make the trip to Newport News, giving Apprentice School (5-3, 3-0 New South Athletic Conference) a 2-0 forfeit victory.
Apprentice will play at Clayton State in Georgia at 1 p.m. next Saturday, and the winner will advance to the NSAC championship game. Barber-Scotia dropped to 1-5, 0-3.
According to Apprentice School, refunds will be processed Monday for all presold tickets and tailgating spots.
Navy 42, Florida Atlantic 32: Quarterback Blake Horvath ran for 174 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries to guide the Midshipmen (7-0, 5-0 American) past the Owls (3-5, 2-3) in Annapolis, Maryland.
Alex Tecza and Braxton Woodson also ran for touchdowns, and Brandon Chatman amassed 141 yards on 10 carries and caught five passes for 43 yards. Navy finished with 397 yards on 56 carries.
Two FAU quarterbacks passed for a pair of two touchdowns: Caden Veltkamp (25 of 41 for 299 yards) and Zach Gibson (9 of 14 for 82 yards).
Mercer 62, VMI 0: Braden Atkinson and the Bears (6-1, 5-0 Southern Conference), ranked 17th in FCS, decimated the Keydets (1-7, 0-4) in Macon, Georgia. It was 31-0 after one quarter.
Atkinson threw for 538 yards and five touchdowns on 29-of-35 accuracy.
