No. 17 Christopher Newport slips past East Texas Baptist, runs streak to 7

Christopher Newport, ranked 17th nationally by d3hoops.com, survived a big scare Saturday from East Texas Baptist to earn a 61-59 victory at Freeman Center.

The Captains (15-3) hung on against the Tigers (5-13) to extend their winning streak to seven games.

Zyir Baskerville led the Captains with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Collin Hines had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Led by Michael Roberts’ 17 points and 10 rebounds, ETBU led 45-40 with 11:38 to go, but the Captains came back. It was 56-53 before Tyson Henderson and Brandon Freeman sank 3-pointers to give CNU a 59-56 edge with 3:05 on the clock.
The Tigers’ Joshua Joe missed a leaning bank shot just before the final buzzer.

Roanoke 73, Virginia Wesleyan 64: The Maroons (11-4, 4-2), who are receiving votes below the d3hoops.com top 25, went to TowneBank Arena and handed the Marlins (9-5, 4-1) their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference defeat.

Marcus Morgan and Jackson Bell scored 17 points apiece for Roanoke, which has won six of its last seven games, and Caleb Franze had 14. For VWU, Malcolm Velmar scored 15, Khai Seargeant 13 and Omari DeVeaux 12.

Roanoke led throughout the second half and by as many as 11.

Mary Washington 84, Regent 58: Kye Robinson scored 19 points as the Eagles (14-1), ranked sixth by d3hoops.com, rolled to a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Royals in Fredericksburg. It was the 400th college coaching victory for Marcus Kahn.

Darrin Clark led Regent (2-13) with 11 points and became the first Royal ever to score 1,000, but the team’s losing streak reached 11 games.

Bryant & Stratton 90, Central Carolina Community College 76: The Bobcats (9-5, 7-3 conference) earned a triumph over a squad from Sanford, North Carolina, in Atlantic Shores’ gym.

Saint Louis 88, Richmond 63: The Billikens (17-1, 5-0 Atlantic 10) won their 11th consecutive game and improved to 13-0 at home.

Kellen Thames scored 16 to lead five double-digit Saint Louis scorers. AJ Lopez paced the Spiders (13-6, 3-3) with 20 points, and Will Harper III had 17.

Marshall 77, James Madison 72: Jalen Speer scored 22 points, including a four-point play with 1:02 to go to extend the lead to five, as the host Thundering Herd (12-7, 4-3 Sun Belt) completed a two-game sweep of the Dukes (9-10, 2-5). Marshall outrebounded JMU 45-36.

Cliff Davis sank six 3-pointers and scored 20 points for JMU, which led by 10 in the second half. Bradley Douglas added 15.

Liberty 80, UTEP 69: Zach Cleveland’s 20 points, six rebounds, three steals and four blocks in Lynchburg led the Flames (15-3, 7-0 Conference USA) to their ninth consecutive victory. Brett Decker Jr. also had 20 points, and Colin Porter had 15.

Texas El Paso’s Miners (6-12, 2-5) were led by Elijah Jones’ 21 points and seven rebounds.

Radford 85, Longwood 83: Del Jones hit a tie-breaking layup with 1 seconds remaining and had 25 points and six rebounds for the Highlanders (11-9, 4-1 Big South) in a home victory. Lukas Walls scored 17 points and Dennis Parker Jr. added 13.

Redd Thompson led the Lancers (10-10, 2-3) with 21 points. Longwood also got 17 points and 16 rebounds from Elijah Tucker.

Radford went ahead 17-3, but Longwood finally caught up with 1:10 to go.
