No. 17 CNU extends winning streak to 8 behind Hollenbeck’s career high

Junior Toa Hollenbeck scored a career-high 32 points Sunday as Christopher Newport held off Mary Hardin-Baylor 93-88 at Freeman Center. The Captains (16-3), ranked 17th nationally by d3hoops.com, hiked their winning streak to eight games.

Hollenbeck, from Grassfield High, hit 6 of 8 3-point tries among 11 of 17 field-goal tries overall. He also sank all four of his free throws for CNU, which was 22 of 28 at the line.

Also for CNU, Collin Hines had 15 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals, and Tyson Henderson and Zyir Baskerville added 13 points each.

CNU led by 15 points with 8:28 remaining, but the Crusaders came back behind Hudson Johnson, who scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half. They pulled to 90-88 with 18 seconds left. After Henderson hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it 91-88,

Elijah Lawrence missed a 3-point attempt. Hines rebounded it just before the buzzer and hit two free throws, giving CNU its second taut win over a Lone Star State team in two days — the Captains edged East Texas Baptist 61-59 Saturday.

Virginia Peninsula Community College 91, Tidewater Community College 80: The Gators (12-7) won at Churchland High, dropping the first-year Storm to 2-14.

Barber-Scotia 84, Apprentice 73: The Builders (10-7, 2-2 New South Athletic Conference) fell in Newport News to a team they defeated 81-55 Dec. 21 in Concord, North Carolina.

Jalen Mattocks had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead four double-figure scorers for the visitors. For Apprentice, Shamon Rosser had 22 points, Ahmiir Colpetro had 17 points, four rebounds and four steals, Jahlil Hope had 10 points and 15 rebounds, and Wayne Hedgepeth had nine points and 12 rebounds.

American 78, Army 67: Julen Iturbe had 26 points and five rebounds as the Eagles (11-8, 4-2 Patriot League) won in West Point, New York. Greg Jones scored 16 points.

The Black Knights (7-12, 1-5) were led by Jacen Holloway, who finished with 21 points, four assists and three steals.

South Carolina Central Christian 89, Apprentice 80: The Gladiators (2-10, 1-3 New South Athletic Conference) outplayed the Builders in Newport News despite Jahlil Hope’s 30 points and 13 rebounds.

Nazir Sample led five visitors in double-figure scoring, with 14 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.

Besides Hope for Apprentice, Wayne Hedgepeth scored 16 and Shamon Rosser and Ahmiir Colpetro had 10 points each. Hedgepeth grabbed 10 rebounds.

Bryant & Stratton 90, Central Carolina Community College 76: The Bobcats (9-5, 7-3 conference) earned a triumph over a squad from Sanford, North Carolina, in Atlantic Shores’ gym.

The Citadel 82, VMI 68: Braxton Williams scored 22 points for the Bulldogs (5-14, 2-4 Southern Conference) as they won in Lexington.

TJ Johnson led the Keydets (6-13, 1-5) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Menchville High product AJ Clark added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.

No. 5 Purdue 69, Southern California 64: Braden Smith stole the ball at midcourt and hit a layup with 23 seconds remaining in Los Angeles, helping Purdue pull into a first-place tie with Nebraska in the Big Ten with its ninth consecutive victory. The Trojans (14-4, 3-4) were just 5 of 14 from the free-throw line.

No. 6 Duke 80, Stanford 50: Cameron Boozer had 30 points and 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Isaiah Evans scored 15 points and Patrick Ngongba II added 13 for the Blue Devils (17-1, 6-0 ACC) in front of a standing-room only, sellout crowd in Duke’s first visit to Maples Pavilion. Jeremy Dent-Smith scored 18 points for Stanford (14-5, 3-3).

No. 9 Gonzaga 71, Seattle 50: Mario Saint-Supery came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points as Gonzaga overcame the absence of its top two scorers in Seattle for its 12th straight victory.

Jalen Warley added 14 points, and David Fogle had 13 for the Bulldogs (19-1, 7-0 West Coast Conference). Brayden Maldonado led Seattle (13-7, 2-5) with 12 points.

No. 15 Texas Tech 84, No. 11 Brigham Young 71: JT Toppin had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Texas Tech rallied in the second half in Lubbock to end BYU’s 13-game winning streak.

Christian Anderson scored 22 points and LeJuan Watts added 20 for the Red Raiders (14-4, 4-1 Big 12). Robert Wright III had 28 points while season-leading scorer AJ Dybantsa was limited to 13 on 6-of-17 shooting for the Cougars (16-2, 4-1).

No. 12 Michigan State 80, Washington 63: Jeremy Fears Jr. scored 19 points as the Spartans (16-2, 6-1 Big Ten) won in their first game at Washington since 1957.

No. 20 Louisville 100, Pittsburgh 59: Ryan Conwell hit five 3-pointers and scored 24 points, and all five Louisville starters scored in double figures in Pittsburgh. The Cardinals (13-5, 2-4 ACC) led 13-0 and 39-8 over the Panthers (8-10, 1-4).

Wake Forest 69, Florida State 68: Nate Calmese scored 18 points, including a winning jumper with 6.8 seconds left, in the Demon Deacons’ first ACC road win this season.

Wake Forest (11-7, 2-3 ACC) used an 11-4 run to close the gap, and Calmese’s floater put the Deacons ahead before Robert McCray V missed a potential game-winning shot for the Seminoles (7-11, 0-5).
