MIAMI GARDENS — After starting the season with four non-conference games, including wins over rivals Notre Dame and Florida, the Hurricanes have a break.
No. 2 Miami (4-0) has its first bye week of the season leading up to a matchup with No. 8 Florida State (3-0) in Tallahassee on Oct. 4. Despite the week off, UM is making sure it spends the bye week working.
“I always like to do the bye week as a work week,” quarterback Carson Beck said. “I know coach (Mario) Cristobal is on the same exact mindset. We’re going to work this week This is not a week off. This is not time to play games. This is not time to take a step back. This is time to work. Let’s work. Let’s get better at the things that we need to get better at so that when we head into Tallahassee, we’re ready, not only physically, but mentally. So it’s a work week.”
The Hurricanes have had issues coming out of bye weeks in the past. From 2018-2023, Miami lost seven of eight games after bye weeks, including two in a row under Cristobal. The Hurricanes snapped the streak last year with a post-bye week win over Louisville.
“Now we have a bye week to (get healthier),” Cristobal said. “But you also have to prepare for a very unique scheme and going (to) our first road game. We’ve been home for four weeks straight, which has been an unbelievable advantage and opportunity.”
Kickoff time, broadcast information for UM-FSU announced
The national spotlight will be on the Hurricanes again when they face the Seminoles.
Miami’s road game against Florida State on Oct. 4 will be at 7:30 p.m. and broadcast on ABC, the ACC announced. It’s the third UM game that will be featured on broadcast television in prime time so far this season.
ESPN has not announced where its weekly pregame show, “College GameDay,” will broadcast from that day, but there is speculation the Hurricanes’ game could be featured again because the Seminoles, coming off a 2-10 season last year, are also resurgent early this season.
Bain earns weekly award
Miami defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. continued his dominant start to the season against Florida, and he earned a weekly accolade for it.
Bain was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his performance against the Gators. It was the second time this season he earned the honor; he was also named the conference’s defensive player of the week after UM’s win over Notre Dame in Week 1.
Bain had seven tackles, one tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks, and he was constantly in UF quarterback DJ Lagway’s face. He had a career-best 10 quarterback pressures and earned a defensive grade of 93.8 from Pro Football Focus.
Bain has 22 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception this year. He also has 22 quarterback pressures, and his 95.8 defensive grade for the season is the best in the nation among players with 10 or more snaps.
