No. 21 Christopher Newport routs Vermont State Castleton

Christopher Newport, ranked 21st nationally by d3football.com, couldn’t have had a much more dominant road game Saturday.

The Captains (5-0, 2-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference) scored touchdowns on all five first-half possessions and went on to rout homestanding Vermont State Castleton 69-7.

Tallwood High graduate Gunner White rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Drevyon Tharrington, a freshman fgrom Granby High, ran for two TDs and 68 yards on five attempts. Zavier Kennedy also had two rushing touchdowns among his nine carries for 52 yards.

Connor Barry was 10 of 14 for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Backup quarterbacks Brandon Pena and Cooper Meads got experience after the outcome was decided, as did some of coach Paul Crowley’s reserves at many other positions.

Castleton, a first-year NJAC member, dropped to 2-3, 0-2.

Apprentice 60, Lighthouse Christian 33: The Builders (3-3, 2-0) took a large step toward advancing to the first New South Athletic Conference championship game, dealing the Makos (5-1, 1-1) of Pensacola, Florida, their first loss on a neutral field at Lumpkin County High in Dahlonega, Georgia.

If Apprentice wins the four-team North Division, it will advance to the conference title game Nov. 15 in Morrow, Georgia. Saturday marked the first win ever in Georgia for the Builders, who led by such margins as 24-0 and 53-20.

Kendall Hunt finished 16 of 25 for 278 yards and four touchdowns, and backup Bryce Davis was 6 of 9 for 69 yards and a score.T.K. Petty had eight catches for 155 yards and three TDs. Bradley Hebb and Kyle Musselman also made touchdown grabs, and Alvin Hicks, Tyreon Taylor and Colby Messe ran for scores.

Defensively, Caleb Davidson had six tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

The Makos’ Chase Ray was 19 of 39 for 317 yards and three TDs.

James Madison 24, Louisiana 14: Alonza Barnett III threw three touchdown passes to Landon Ellis for the Dukes (5-1, 3-0 Sun Belt), who nearly fell behind by two touchdowns to the underdog Ragin’ Cajuns (2-4, 1-1) just before halftime but mostly dominated the final two quarters. JMU, 20-7 in conference games since joining the Sun Belt in 2022, will hold its homecoming next Saturday against Old Dominion.

In a game pitting the preseason favorites in the Sun Belt’s East and West divisions, the Dukes stuffed a Louisiana running play from the 1 on the final play of the first half. Barnett’s 62-yard flea-flicker touchdown pass to Ellis on the first play of the third quarter tied the score at 14, and a 4-yard pass to Ellis in the back of the end zone made it 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Morgan Suarez added a 24-yard field goal for the final margin.

Barnett completed 26 of 40 passes for 290 yards, but was intercepted once. Ellis had 120 receiving yards on six catches. Former backup quarterback Lunch Winfield, known mostly for running prowess, threw two touchdown passes for the Cajuns, who lost numerous players to early-season injuries.

UNLV 51, Air Force 48: Former Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw for 361 yards and ran for a 19-yard touchdown with 36 seconds left, giving UNLV (6-0, 2-0 Mountain West) a victory in Las Vegas over the Falcons (1-5, 0-4).

Liam Szarka’s 9-yard touchdown run had given Air Force a 48-44 lead with 1:13 remaining. Colandrea then scrambled for the go-ahead score.

Szarka led the Falcons to the UNLV 23 on their final drive, but Jacob Medina missed a 40-yard field-goal attempt.

Colandrea was 20-of-32 passing, including an 86-yard touchdown to Daejon Reynolds early in the third quarter. Colandrea also had a short touchdown run in the first quarter and finished with 62 yards on seven carries.

The teams combined for six lead changes and 42 points in the fourth quarter.

Army 24, Charlotte 7: Quarterback Cale Hellums rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns for the Black Knights (3-3, 2-2 American) against the 49ers (1-5, 0-3). It was Army’s first victory at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York, this season after a pair of overtime defeats.

Army scored the opening 24 points of the game before Charlotte got a 16-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Hellums’ 50-yard run in the first quarter led to his 1-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. His 44-yard completion to Noah Short set up Hellums’ second 1-yard touchdown run with 4:16 remaining in the third to make it 24-0. In between, Carson Smith ended a 17-play, 85-yard drive with a short touchdown run for a 14-0 lead.

Hellums completed 2 of 4 passes for 50 yards.

Richmond 24, Colgate 19: Andreas Hill’s first college touchdown and an 87-yard punt return by Ja’Vion Griffin in the fourth quarter pushed the Spiders (4-3, 1-2 Patriot League) to a victory over the Raiders (2-4, 1-1) in Hamilton, New York.

UR led early on quarterback Ashten Snelsire’s 1-yard run to cap a 13-play drive before Colgate rallied for a 10-7 halftime lead. Jayden Alsheskie’s 24-yard field goal in the third quarter pulled the Spiders even.

Snelsire found Hill streaking past a double-team for a 75-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Richmond a 17-13 lead. After Colgate’s Jake Stearney connected with Reed Swanson for an 8-yard touchdown, Griffin’s 87-yard return gave the Spiders back the lead midway through the fourth.

Snelsire finished 13 of 19 for 199 yards and a touchdown and ran for another. Richmond managed 97 yards rushing, but UR’s Peyton Seelmann intercepted Stearney to virtually seal the game in the fourth. Stearney went 25 of 45 for 322 yards and two touchdowns.

Morgan State 44, Virginia University of Lynchburg 6: The Bears (3-4) went ahead 23-0 at halftime with a 16-point second quarter and dominated the lower-level Dragons (3-3) in Baltimore.

Morgan State’s Raymond Moore III was 13 of 22 for 173 yards and a touchdown (to Justin Perry), and teammate Dorian Harris ran 16 times for 95 yards.

VUL scored on Max Zavala’s 4-yard pass to Jacob Newman with 7:34 to go in the game.

East Tennessee State 45, VMI 10: Xavier Gaillardetz had an 80-yard punt-return touchdown less than two minutes into the game in Johnson City, Jake McNamara threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns, and ETSU (3-4, 1-2 Southern Conference) routed the Keydets (1-5, 0-2).

The Buccaneers scored the game’s first 31 points, with Jeremiah Harrison and Ephraim Floyd each catching TD passes and Devontae Houston scoring on the ground. Houston led with 76 yards on 12 carries, and Jason Albritton added 56 yards and a rushing score.

The Bucs ran for 284 yards to VMI’s 13 and outgained the Keydets 509-82. Jackson Byrd scored his first career rushing touchdown in the final minute.

The Keydets have lost four straight games, with their lone win coming against Division II Ferrum.
