No. 4 Green Run tops Tallwood, runs Beach District winning streak to 44 games

VIRGINIA BEACH — First-year Tallwood coach Glenwood Ferebee found out first-hand just how good Green Run is on Thursday as the Stallions rolled to a 37-7 win over the Lions to win their 44th consecutive Beach District regular-season game.

“You want to get out and compete with them, but they’re seasoned coaches and seasoned kids,” said Ferebee, who was a first-team All-Tidewater quarterback for the Stallions in the 1990s. “My kids need to understand what that looks like, and that’s what we want to get to.”

The Stallions, who have won four consecutive district titles and played in the state semifinals four of the last five years, dominated the night with a strong running game led by Charles Jackson III and Tristen Williams, who combined for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns.

“We’re going to take pride in the running ball this season,” said Green Run coach Brandon Williams, whose teams have been known for their passing game in recent seasons. “We still got a quarterback who can still fling it, but we got a running back stable that when we get the ball in their hands, they can take care of the ball game.”

Jackson rushed for 140 yards and scored on two touchdown runs of 6 yards. Williams rushed for more than 70 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run.

“I had to put my trust in my linemen,” Jackson said. “It was a blessing to run behind my blocks.”

Green Run wide receiver Xavier Clark finished with nearly 200 all-purpose yards, including a 43-yard touchdown reception.

The only thing that didn’t go right for the Stallions was penalties, including three that brought back touchdowns. In all, the two teams combined for more than 30 penalties.

“That was definitely frustrating,” Jackson said. “We still have a lot of work to do. But we kept our composure and we just kept going and kept working and moving onto to the next play.”

Added Williams: “We can’t control the referees, but what we control are our penalties,” he said. “So, we have to clean that up.”
