Norfolk, New York and federal authorities arrest 2 accused of murder and robbery

The Norfolk Police Department, in collaboration with New York and federal authorities, announced Wednesday the arrests of two men on murder and robbery charges in the July killing of a man near the Calvert Square community.

Early in the morning of July 13, police found a man, 32-year-old Dion L. Melton, with a gunshot wound at a residence off Bagnall Road. Police said Melton died from his injuries after he was taken to a hospital.

The men charged in the killing, 32-year-old Joy T. Samuels of Norfolk and 31-year-old Robert Gilmore of Norfolk, both face charges of second-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy.

The two accused men were taken into custody in Brooklyn, New York Tuesday “without incident,” authorities said. The U.S. Marshals Service and the New York Police Department aided in the arrests and investigation, according to police.

They await extradition, police said, and will be detained at Norfolk City Jail until then.

Police referred to the investigation as a homicide.

No additional details have been released.
