WASHINGTON — Despite some excellent moments, the Norfolk State Spartans finished Michael Vick’s first coaching season with a familiar result: a 10th consecutive loss.
NSU closed the season with a 44-15 loss to the Howard Bison on Saturday afternoon at Audi Field. The defeat dropped the Spartans to 1-11 overall and 0-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Tyriq Starks threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns for Howard (5-7, 2-3), and Anthony Reagan Jr. racked up 162 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns. The Bison ended a three-game losing streak.
Senior running back Kevon King led the Spartans with 96 rushing yards, while Kam’ryn Thomas and DreSean Kendrick combined for 165 receiving yards, highlighted by a touchdown catch by Thomas. Nashir Bashir intercepted two passes and accumulated 45 return yards.
NSU started the game with a nine-play, 78-yard scoring drive. Kendrick had a 13-yard run and a 22-yard catch, and JJ Evans made a 12-yard reception. X’Zavion Evans capped the drive with an 11-yard rushing touchdown for a 7-0 lead.
Howard answered early in the second with Travis Kerney’s 4-yard rushing score, but the Spartans blocked the extra- point kick and returned it to the end zone for two points and a 9-6 advantage.
The Bison grabbed control from there, leading 23-9 at halftime.
Howard extended its lead in the third quarter, consuming six minutes on a touchdown drive to go ahead 30-9. After stopping NSU, the Bison struck again as Reagan raced for a 56-yard touchdown, extending the margin to 37-9.
NSU’s final touchdown came when backup Parker Lancaster, a former Oscar Smith High quarterback, delivered a 34-yard touchdown pass to Thomas with less than four minutes left in the third quarter.
Lots of soul-searching figures to follow for Vick, his staff and players.
