Norfolk State men make 37 free throws in triumph vs. SC State

The Norfolk State men shot 55.8% from the field as they earned an 89-82 victory over South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship-game rematch at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in Orangeburg.

Anthony McComb III paced Norfolk State (8-12, 2-2 MEAC) with 19 points, converting 14 of 15 free throws as the team sank 37 of 47. The 37 free-throw points are the third-most in any game in Spartans history.

Four additional Spartans finished in double figures, as Elijah Jamison and My’kel Jenkins each had 14 points, Devon Ellis added 13, and Keyontae Lewis chipped in 12. Lewis led NSU with seven rebounds, while Jamison and Jenkins each grabbed five. Jenkins also made three steals.

SCSU (3-16, 2-2) was looking for payback after losing 66-65 at Scope to the Spartans in last year’s final. The Bulldogs moved ahead 16-5, but NSU outscored them 16-2 to grab a 21-18 lead. After a 36-36 halftime tie, the edge went back and forth.

A 12-2 surge extended NSU’s lead to 74-63. SCSU fouled often to stop the clock, and the Spartans sank 11 of 16 free throws to ensure the victory.

NSU will return home Monday to Echols Hall for a 7 p.m. game against Elizabeth City State.
