MEAC honors NSU’s Clark, former Crabber

Norfolk State junior guard Da’Brya Clark earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after her record-breaking performance at South Carolina State.

The Baltimore native knocked down a school-record nine 3-pointers in an 85-41 win Saturday. She recorded her second college double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds, adding five assists, four steals and two blocks.

Maryland Eastern Shore forward Kaliya Perry, from Hampton High, was named the Rookie of the Week. She contributed 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks and an assist in a 68-61 win over Coppin State.

COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL

Big South rewards pair of Highlanders

Radford guard Del Jones and Presbyterian forward Jonah Pierce were named the Big South Co-Players of the Week, while Radford forward Frederik Erichsen is the Freshman of the Week.

Jones, from Landover, Maryland, led the Highlanders to wins over Gardner-Webb and Longwood by totaling 52 points, nine rebounds and five assists. He shot 18 of 34 from the field, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and 11 of 13 at the free-throw line.

Erichsen, from Copenhagen, Denmark, contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 29 minutes off the bench in those games.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Baseball America ranks UVA 14th

Virginia was ranked 14th in Baseball America’s preseason poll and is one of seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams among the top 25.

UCLA, LSU and Mississippi State comprise the top three, and the ACC teams ahead of the Cavaliers are No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 7 North Carolina and No. 12 Florida State. UVA begins its season Feb. 13 against Wagner.

UVA 10th, JMU 19th in coaches’ poll

Virginia was ranked 10th and James Madison 19th in the coaches’ preseason poll. North Carolina led the list.

UVA CELEBRATION

Cavaliers to honor youth in Sunday game

The Virginia Cavaliers’ women’s sports programs will be honored at the National Girls and Women in Sports Day  celebration Sunday.

The celebration, themed “Legacy & Limitless Potential,” will take place as part of the women’s basketball game against NC State that tips at noon. Fans will have the opportunity to have a NGWSD poster signed by the entire women’s basketball team following the game.

There will also be a pregame youth sports festival on the concourse of John Paul Jones Arena from 10:30-11:50 a.m. It will include multiple sports stations for youth to participate and will feature UVA athletes from various programs.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

Apprentice takes second as Eastman rules at 174

Logan Eastman won the 174-pound division at the Builder Invitational to highlight Apprentice School’s second-place team finish Saturday to Ferrum in Newport News.

Eastman won four bouts, pinning Clemson’s Gabe Silverman for the championship.

Lucas Summer was the runner-up at 184, pinning two opponents before losing a 14-8 decision to Marymount’s Julian Schott in the final.

Aidan Vasquez (133) and DJ Uribes (heavyweight) placed third, Landon Yoder was fourth at 141, Amari Williams finished fifth at 149, and Jack Landauer was sixth at 157.

Davis & Elkins was third, Marymount fourth and Clemson fifth in the team standings.
