SPARTANBURG, S.C. — In a big understatement, Norfolk State will be looking for a reset entering Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
First-year coach Michael Vick’s Spartans fell to 1-6 entering their bye week with a 31-14 loss Saturday at previously winless Wofford. They have lost five games in a row since narrowly beating Division II Virginia State and will close the season by facing five MEAC foes.
Wofford (1-5) had suffered four losses by a touchdown or less, the only exception being a defeat at higher-level Virginia Tech. But the Terriers had no such problem Saturday.
J.T. Fayard threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-34 accuracy, and Ihson Jackson-Anderson and Gerald Modest sparked the Terriers’ ground game. Jackson-Anderson had 113 yards on 17 carries, and Modest added 82 on 18.
Again, NSU faded toward the game’s end. The Southern Conference’s Terriers scored the last 17 points.
NSU’s Otto Kuhns completed 16 of 29 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Elyjah Mitchell and Kam’ryn Thomas for scores. Thomas led all receivers with eight catches for 112 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown early in the third quarter that tied the game at 14.
Wofford outgained Norfolk State 435-242 in offensive yards and controlled the ball for 36:51 compared to the Spartans’ 23:09.
NSU’s Terique Miles recorded a team-high 13 tackles, followed by Khalib Gilmore with 10. Makai Frisby intercepted a pass and forced a fumble.
