NSU women fall at App State for fifth straight defeat

Daisia Mitchell scored 21 points and Feryal Defne Atili added 17 as Appalachian State defeated Norfolk State 66-38 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Tuesday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina.

The Spartans (2-6) have dropped five straight since a 2-1 start, although two of those losses came against Top 25 teams.

Da’Brya Clark scored 14 points off the bench and was the only double-figure scorer for NSU, which shot 26% from the field and 24% (4 of 17) from 3-point range.

App State (5-2) outrebounded the Spartans 40-25 and shot 45% from the field.

Top 25 men

No. 11 Michigan State 89, East Carolina 56: Jaxon Kohler and Divine Ugochukwu each scored 16 points to lead Michigan State’s balanced attack as the Spartans (6-0) beat East Carolina (2-4) in the Fort Myers Tip-Off.

The Spartans had 36 points in the paint, 35 points from its reserves and 31 points off 24 East Carolina turnovers.

No. 15 Iowa State 78, Creighton 60: Freshman Killyan Toure scored a career-high 20 points and Iowa State (6-0) beat Creighton (3-3) in the second round of the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas.

Despite missing co-leading scorer Tamin Lipsey, who injured his groin in Monday’s 83-82 win over St. John’s, the Cyclones kept Creighton at arm’s length for most of the game.

ACC

No. 23 NC State 81, Boise State 70: Darrion Williams scored 16 points and N.C. State beat Boise State in a Maui Invitational consolation game.

The Wolfpack (5-1) bounced back from an 11-point loss to Seton Hall one day prior to handing the Broncos (4-3) their second loss in as many days.

Notre Dame 68, Rutgers 63: Markus Burton had 21 points, five assists and three steals, Jalen Haralson added 15 points and Notre Dame (5-2) held off Rutgers (4-3) at the Players Era Festival. Jamichael Davis led Rutgers with 21 points.

State

Towson 72, Liberty 69: Tyler Tejada scored 20 points, including two free throws in the closing seconds, to help Towson (5-2) defeat Liberty (5-1) in the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Florida. Kaden Metheny led the way for the Flames with 16 points.

Military

East Texas A&M 84, Army 67: Damian Garcia scored 20 points off the bench to lead East Texas A&M (4-3) to a win at the FDU Basketball Classic in Hackensack, New Jersey. Kevin McCarthy had 12 points to lead Army (1-6).

No. 12 Gonzaga 95, No. 8 Alabama 85: Tyon Grant-Foster and Graham Ike each scored 21 points to lead Gonzaga to a victory over Alabama in the Players Era tournament, the Bulldogs’ second win over a ranked team.

Gonzaga (6-0) defeated then-No. 23 Creighton 90-63 on Nov. 11. Alabama (3-2) has played four ranked teams, going 2-2.

No. 2 Arizona 103, Denver 73: Brayden Burries and Ivan Kharchenkov each scored a career-high 20 points and Arizona (6-0) got 72 points from freshmen in a home win over Denver (2-4).

The Wildcats won their 41st consecutive home game against an unranked opponent.

No. 7 Michigan 94, San Diego State 54: Yaxel Lendeborg scored 15 points and Michigan (4-0) routed San Diego State (2-1) in the opening round of the Players Era tournament.

Michigan outrebounded the Aztecs 45-39 and scored 15 fast-break points.

No. 13 Illinois 87, Texas Rio Grande Valley 73: Andrej Stojakovic scored 24 points for his fourth 20-point performance in five games, leading Illinois (6-1) to a home victory over Texas Rio Grande Valley (2-4).

No. 15 Iowa State 83, No. 14 St. John’s 82: Milan Momcilovic scored a game-high 23 points and Iowa State defeated St. John’s in the Players Era tournament.

Tamin Lipsey scored 16 points for Iowa State (5-0) before leaving with a lower-body injury.

Oziyah Sellers led St. John’s (3-2) with 20 points.

No. 21 Auburn 84, Oregon 73: Tahaad Pettiford scored 24 points before fouling out and Auburn (5-1) beat Oregon (4-1) in the Players Era Championship.

The Tigers shot 57.1% in the second half and used a late 10-0 run to pull away from pesky Oregon and extend their winning streak against Big Ten teams to nine.

ACC

No. 3 Houston 78, Syracuse 74: Emanuel Sharp and Milos Uzan each scored 26 points, teaming for all 11 of Houston’s points in overtime, in the Cougars’ victory over Syracuse in the opening round of the Players Era Tournament.

Uzan, playing in his hometown, scored six points in OT and Sharp had five to keep the Cougars (6-0) undefeated.

Tyler Betsey led Syracuse (4-1) with 16 points.

No. 6 Louisville 87, Eastern Michigan 46: Isaac McKneely, a transfer from Virginia, scored 17 points for Louisville (6-0), which put the defensive clamps on Eastern Michigan and held the Eagles (3-3) to 28% shooting in a home victory.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 19-4 lead midway through the first half.

SMU 89, Radford 72: Boopie Miller scored 25 points and distributed 10 assists, Corey Washington and Jaron Pierre Jr. also recorded double-doubles and SMU (7-0) beat Radford (2-6) at home to keep its record perfect. Dennis Parker Jr. scored 18 points for the Highlanders.

STATE

George Mason 92, Ohio 69: Kory Mincy scored 22 points and unbeaten George Mason (6-0) beat Ohio (1-5) in the Beach Division of the Sunshine Slam.

James Madison 80, Florida International 72: Justin McBride scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds as James Madison (4-3) beat Florida International (2-3) in Miami.

WOMEN

Virginia 69, Northwestern State 48: Freshman Gabby White scored a career-high 13 points off the bench to lift Virginia to a victory over Northwestern State as the Cavaliers advanced to the Beach Bracket championship game at the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Florida.

UVA (5-1) played Nebraska on Tuesday night at Raider Arena.

White made 6 of 9 shots from the field and finished with six rebounds, while teammates Kymora Johnson and Jillian Brown scored 10 points each.
