Virginia Wesleyan maintained first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a wild 99-95 home victory Saturday over Guilford at TowneBank Arena.
Omari DeVeaux’s 29 points and TJ East’s 22 at TowneBank Arena helped the Marlins (13-5, 8-1) prevail. Paul Anderson and Malcolm Velmar added 15 points each for VWU. East had eight rebounds, while DeVeaux and Amari Moorer each had six.
Braylen Salters had 36 points for the Quakers (10-9, 4-6) but was 8 of 24 from the field.
East sank two free throws with 19:20 remaining to put Virginia Wesleyan ahead 49-47, and the Marlins retained a mostly precarious lead thereafter despite being ahead 71-58 at the 13:47 mark.
Howard 88, Norfolk State 60: The Bison (13-9, 3-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) registered a stunningly easy victory at Burr Gymnasium in Washington over the Spartans (10-14, 3-4), who are unaccustomed to being under .500 this deep in the season.
Cedric Taylor III had 27 points, nine rebounds and three steals for Howard, and Bryce Harris had 27 points and eight rebounds. The Bison shot 54% (27 of 50), with Taylor going 9 for 10 and Harris hitting 8 of 11.
NSU got 13 points from Jordan Leaks and 11 from Anthony McComb III, but was outrebounded 42-18 and shot 35% (19 of 55).
Howard went ahead 7-0, led 42-28 at halftime and maintained a double-figure lead through the second half.
Towson 82, Hampton 50: Dylan Williamson poured in 29 points and distributed seven assists as the host Tigers (13-11, 5-6 Coastal Athletic Association) surged past the Pirates (10-13, 4-6) and handed them their third consecutive defeat.
Jack Doumbia Jr. added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for Towson, and Mor Seck had 11 points.
Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt had 11 points and reserve Peter Oduro added 10 for HU, which was 17 of 58 (29%) from the field and 9 of 18 from the free-throw line. Xzavier Long had eight points and 11 rebounds
Towson hit 56% (30 of 54) from the field, including 7 of 16 from 3-point range.
Southern Mississippi 73, James Madison 65: The Golden Eagles (12-12, 6-6 Sun Belt) ended a five-game slide and halted a two-game winning streak of JMU (11-12, 4-7) with a triumph in Hattiesburg.
Tylik Weeks had 28 points, hitting 14 of 18 free throws, for Southern Miss. The Eagles were 28 of 34 at the line, including Dylan Brumfield’s 8 for 8.
Cliff Davis and Bradley Douglas scored 18 points each on a combined 13-for-35 shooting for the Dukes, who were missing injured standout Justin McBride.
JMU went on a 13-2 run to go ahead 43-42, only to see Southern Miss retake control with a 14-3 run.
Davidson 79, Richmond 54: Outscoring the Spiders 34-15 in the first half at Robins Center, the Wildcats (13-8, 5-4 Atlantic 10) rolled past the Spiders (13-10, 3-7) at Robins Center. UR lost its fifth consecutive contest.
Davidson reserve Roberts Blums led all scorers with 23 points and was 6 of 8 from 3-point range. The Wildcats hit 53% from the field. Richmond, led by Will Johnston’s 11 points and Aiden Argabright’s 10, shot 36.7% and scored its fewest points in any game this season.
Radford 93, Presbyterian 84, 2OT: Jaylon Johnson’s 23 points and Del Jones’ 22 propelled the Highlanders (13-11, 6-3 Big South) past the Blue Hose (11-13, 4-5) in Clinton, South Carolina.
Jonah Pierce had 28 points and 17 rebounds for Presbyterian, which lost its third straight game.
Two free throws by Radford’s Dennis Parker Jr. with 18 seconds left in the first overtime forced a tie at 83. The Highlanders outscored the Blue Hose 10-1 in the second OT, when Johnson sank two 3s.
High Point 71, Longwood 59: Terry Anderson had 22 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Panthers (20-4, 8-1) as they won in Farmville and stayed tied with Winthrop for first place in the Big South. Owen Aquino scored 12 points and added seven rebounds for High Point, which led 31-21 at the half and by at least five points thereafter.
Redd Thompson led the Lancers (12-12, 4-5) with 16 points. Johan Nziemi added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Emanuel Richards also put up 10 points.
Mercer 95, VMI 81: Baraka Okojie had 24 points and seven assists in Macon, Georgia, as the Bears (15-8, 7-3 Southern Conference) dealt the Keydets (6-17, 1-9) their eighth straight loss.
Kyle Cuffe Jr. had 17 points for Mercer, while Armani Mighty had 17 points and eight rebounds and Brady Shoulders had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
TJ Johnson scored 26 for VMI, while Linus Holmstrom had 17, Tan Yildizoglu 13 and Cal Liston 12. Yildizoglu had 10 assists.
Navy 87, Loyola Maryland 71: Aidan Kehoe netted 23 points and seven rebounds for the Patriot League-leading Midshipmen (17-6, 9-1) in a home triumph. They won their fifth consecutive game.
Jordan Pennick (15 points), Donovan Draper (14), Jinwoo Kim (12), Austin Benigni (11) and Cam Cole (10) joined Kehoe in double-figure scoring for Navy.
Emmett Adair scored 28 for the Greyhounds (8-15, 4-6).
Army 69, Holy Cross 68: Ryan Curry scored 27 points and secured the victory with a jump shot with 15 seconds remaining in West Point, New York.
Curry also had five rebounds for the Black Knights (10-13, 4-6 Patriot League). Jorn Everson scored 11 points for Army, and Joshua Eli added 12 rebounds and nine points.
Aiden Disu finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Crusaders (8-15, 3-7), who have lost five consecutive games.
Fresno State 79, Air Force 62: David Douglas Jr. scored 21 points for the visiting Bulldogs (10-11, 4-6 Mountain West). Zaon Collins added 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Falcons (3-18, 0-10), mired in a 14-game skid, were led by Ethan Greenberg, who posted 11 points and six rebounds.
