Old Dominion head coach Ricky Rahne has been named to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association, the AFCA announced Tuesday.
Rahne guided the Monarchs to a 10-3 record and a win over South Florida in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl in his seventh year in Norfolk.
Other head coaches named to the board include Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire, New Mexico’s Jason Eck, San Diego State’s Sean Lewis, Montana State’s Brent Vigen and Michigan State’s Pat Fitzgerald.
Rahne will now be one of five state coaches on the board. Hampton’s Van Malone, UVA’s Tony Elliott, Liberty’s Jamey Chadwell and Virginia Union’s Alvin Parker are the others.
The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922.

CNU rallies to win season opener
Sam Benedict hit a two-run single to spark an eight-run seventh inning and Christopher Newport rallied from a 4-1 deficit to a 9-4 victory over Eastern Mennonite in its season opener Tuesday at Captains Park in Newport News.
Jake Benedict went 3 for 5 with an RBI and Aaron Maxie went 2 for 5 with two RBIs for the Captains.
CNU is scheduled to host Southern Virginia in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
UVA, JMU pitchers make stopper list
Virginia’s Lucas Hartman and James Madison’s Max Kuhle were among 104 players named to the initial watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award.
Hartman comes to UVA from Western Kentucky, where he went 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 53.1 innings last season. He was an All-Conference USA first-team selection.
Kuhle, a former Ocean Lakes High star, went 2-4 with a 4.02 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 56 innings for the Dukes last season.

The Washington Commanders have extended the contract of punter Tress Way. Details weren’t announced. Way earned his third Pro Bowl honor after leading the NFL in percentage of punts downed inside the 20-yard line (52.8) this past season. He ranked fifth in the league in net punt average at 43.9 yards.
Hampton University’s Brianna Charles has been named the CAA Women’s Co-Track Athlete of the Week. The senior from Guyana set a pair of meet records at the Penn Classic in the 60 meters (7.40 seconds) and 200 meters (23.83). Both times rank No. 1 in the CAA this season. Charles was also part of the second-place 4×400 relay team with Arriah Gilmer, Morgan Pruitt and Nylah Felton. They posted a season-best time of 3:41.45.
William & Mary junior Francesca Davis and freshman Tilda Larsson have been named the CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week. They went went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles against Mount St. Mary’s and Maryland, winning 6-3 and 7-6.
William & Mary sophomore Gur Trakhtenberg has been named the CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. He recorded victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in the Tribe’s 4-3 setback to Penn State last weekend.
Christopher Newport junior guard Toa Hollenbeck, a former Grassfield High star, has been named to the National Team of the Week by D3hoops.com. He scored 43 points in CNU’s win over Mary Washington, breaking a Freeman Center record.
The University of Virginia’s Wynton Denkins has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week. He defeated No. 6 Collin Gaj of Virginia Tech 3-2 for the Cavaliers’ highest-ranked victory of the season.
The Virginia Tech softball team is ranked in four national polls: 14th in D1 Softball and NFCA and 16th in ESPN/USA and Softball America.
