ODU DE Trinidad honored by Sun Belt

Old Dominion defensive end Kris Trinidad earned Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in ODU’s 33-0 win over Troy. He registered five tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Virginia’s Fisher Camac, J’Mari Taylor and Trell Harris were named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Lineman, Running Back and Linebacker of the Week, respectively.

Camac had six tackles, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry in Saturday’s 34-17 win at Duke. Taylor rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Harris posted career highs of eight catches for 161 yards and scored a touchdown as he earned his second weekly honor this year.

ODU to play at 2 p.m. Nov. 29

Kickoff times and video coverage were announced for some Nov. 29 games. Among them:

Old Dominion’s home contest against Georgia State will kick off at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. No. 21 James Madison’s game at Coastal Carolina will be at 3:45 on ESPNU.

The network and time for Virginia Tech’s Commonwealth Cup clash at No. 19 Virginia, though, won’t be revealed until after Saturday’s results.

UVA long snapper on prestigious list

Virginia’s Bryce Robinson was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Mannelly Award, presented annually to the nation’s top long snapper.

Three finalists will be announced Monday, Dec. 1, and the winner selected at a live ceremony in Lake Bluff, Illinois, on Dec. 13.

Robinson has snapped for a field-goal and PAT unit that is ninth nationally in points (97). Additionally, 18 of UVA’s 40 total punts have been of at least 50 yards, while 13 have been downed inside opponents’ 20-yard line.

William & Mary (7-4) received votes below the FCS coaches’ top 25 entering its season finale against Richmond.

NSU’s Jenkins repeats as MEAC Rookie of Week

Norfolk State’s My’kel Jenkins was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. Jenkins logged 38 minutes of play across two games, during which he totaled seven points, two rebounds and one block.

Hampton grad gains MEAC honor

Maryland Eastern Shore’s Kaliya Perry was the MEAC Rookie of the Week. The Hampton High graduate totaled 19 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and two blocks, averaging nearly 27 minutes per game, en route to a 2-1 week for the Hawks.

Longwood guard Jesstynie Scott was the Big South Freshman of the Week. She had 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals in games against Bluefield and Navy.

UVA seeded No. 2 in NCAA field of 48

Virginia (12-2-4) gained the No. 2 seed and was among nine ACC teams to qualify for the 48-team NCAA Division I championship field. It was the 13th straight season in which the ACC placed the most teams in the bracket.

Seeded behind only defending champion Vermont, the Cavaliers got a bye until the round of 32 as they seek their eighth NCAA championship. They will play at Klockner Stadium at 5 p.m. Sunday against the winner of Thursday’s first-round game pitting Elon (9-3-6) at UNC Greensboro (12-4-4).

UVA can stay at home all the way to the semifinals, which are set for Cary, North Carolina, on Dec. 12.

The Sun Belt landed four bids, one to a regular-season champion Kentucky team including former Grafton High and Lionsbridge FC star Isaiah Chisolm. The Wildcats will play Thursday at Saint Louis. West Virginia, Central Florida and Marshall got the other Sun Belt berths.

The ACC seeds besides UVA were No. 5 SMU, No. 12 Stanford and No. 15 NC State. Clemson, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Syracuse also notched bids.

Maury, Walsingham players among JMU signees

James Madison coach Marlin Ikenberry announced a signing class of 10 freshmen for the 2027 season, including Maury utility player Lee Garris and Walsingham Academy right-handed pitcher Matthew Swanson.

UVA players set for NCAA individual tourney

The NCAA Division I individual singles and doubles championships begin Tuesday near Orlando, Florida.

Virginia’s Dylan Dietrich, the No. 7 seed, faces Oklahoma’s Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes. UVA’s Keegan Rice faces Oklahoma’s Oscar Lacides, and the Cavaliers’ Jangjun Kim plays No. 8 seed Ozan Baris of Michigan State.

Two former Old Dominion standouts are in the field, too: TCU’s Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Baylor’s Connor van Schalkwyk. Rolland De Ravel will take on Texas A&M’s Alexander Frusina, and van Schalkwyk (one of the 9-16 seeds) will meet Texas’ Sebastian Eriksson.

The men’s doubles will start Wednesday. Dietrich and Mans Dahlberg will play Ohio State’s Aidan Kim and Bryce Nakashima, who are among the 5-8 seeds.

TCU’s Rolland de Ravel and Albert Pedrico Kravtsov will face Delaware’s Tobey Lock and Euan Mackenzie. Baylor’s van Schalkwyk and Zsombor Velcz will play Cornell’s Felipe Pinzon and Petar Teodorovic.

In women’s singles Tuesday, UVA’s Annabelle Xu and Vivian Yang are among the 9-16 seeds. Xu meets Harvard’s Stephanie Yakoff, and Yang plays Arkansas’ Carolina Gomez Alonso.

In women’s doubles Wednesday, Yang and Melodie Collard, among the 5-8 seeds, face Florida’s Xinyi Nong and Nikola Daubnerova. Xu and Martina Genis Salas, also among the 5-8 seeds, meet Fordham’s Nevena Kolarevic and Julianne Nguyen.

Hokies place sixth at National Duals Invitational

Virginia Tech went 3-2 and finished sixth over a two-day span at the National Duals Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The Hokies, who entered the tournament, ranked 10th, lost 19-17 to No. 9 Minnesota, then beat No. 24 Wyoming 25-12, No. 7 NC State 25-9 and No. 15 Illinois 19-18 (by a criterion) before falling 25-10 to the Golden Gophers in the sixth-place bout.

Apprentice women go 4-2 in duals in Lynchburg

The Apprentice School women’s team went 4-2 at the Strong & Courageous Duals in Lynchburg.

Under Chad Simmons, who was promoted to head coach Thursday, the Builders earned the first dual victory in program history, 22-11 over tournament host Liberty. Apprentice then lost to Montreat 33-15, beat Southern Virginia 24-20, beat Randolph 24-20 and defeated Greensboro 21-18 before losing 25-14 to Brewton-Parker.

That came after the Mount Olive Invitational in North Carolina, where Jordyn Anderson took first place at 131 pounds, Skylar Schaefer was the runner-up at 124, while Kaylee Campbell (110) and Ida Pellei (145) placed fourth.

Gwen Matt was 2-2 at 138, and Siddie Hoffen (180) and Janyla Anderson (117) each went 1-2.

Jordyn Anderson is from Woodside High, Janyla Anderson from Oscar Smith, Pellei from Lafayette and Schaefer from Deep Creek.

Hickory grad gains CAA honor for W&M

William & Mary senior Ryann Love, a Hickory High graduate, was named the Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week as the Tribe closed the season. She recorded 13 total blocks in the Tribe’s weekend sweep of Hampton, including three solo.

Sunday, W&M defeated Hampton 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-11) at Holland Hall in the season finale for both, as neither qualified for the six-team Coastal Athletic Association championship tournament.

Audrey Brcka had 11 kills and Beatriz Silva had 21 assists for the Tribe (12-15, 7-9). Racquel Frazier had seven kills for the Pirates (1-26, 0-16).

D-II Player of Year Wartick leads area’s VISAA all-state picks

Numerous players from the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools and Metro Conference gained all-state recognition.

In Division II, StoneBridge’s Maddie Wartick was the Player of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to an unbeaten season and a state championship.

Fellow StoneBridge players Libbie Plumlee, Selah Telfer and Payton Weatherford joined Wartick on the first team, as did Peninsula Catholic’s Deana Tavarez.

Cape Henry Collegiate’s Kate Kimball and StoneBridge’s Zara Ofole were on the second team.

Plumlee’s father, Eric, was named the D-II Coach of the Year after a 38-0 season that produced StoneBridge’s sixth VISAA title since 2016.

In Division I, Catholic’s Isabel Echaniz and Norfolk Academy’s Sydney Petersen made the first team, while Catholic’s Tara Gonzelles was on the second team.

In Division III, Katelyn Balka of Greenbrier Christian Academy was on the first team, and fellow Gator Vivianne Tucker was a second-team choice.

In Division IV, Denbigh Baptist players Addy Burgess, Julia Kinney and Emma Overcash were on the first team, joining Gateway Christian teammates Emma Cory and Julia Cory. The second team included Gateway’s Kaleigh Nagata and Broadwater Academy teammates Caroline Caison and Rylee Hall.

Heritage’s Isaac Ward-Payton was named the All-Region 3/4A Player of the Year, and the Hurricanes’ Nehemiah Carter repeated as the region’s Coach of the Year.

Ex-ODU pitcher Yarbrough reportedly to re-sign with Yankees

Former Old Dominion left-hander Ryan Yarbrough is nearing agreement on a one-year major league contract to stay with the New York Yankees, according to Robert Murray of Fansided. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the deal is pending a physical.

Yarbrough will receive a base salary of $2.5 million in 2026 with an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses available to him, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Last season, he compiled a 4.36 earned-run average in 64 innings, starting eight times and relieving 11 times.
