Old Dominion hammered Norfolk State 15-0 in seven innings Wednesday before 225 at Marty L. Miller Field in the city foes’ first baseball clash this year.
The top three batters in ODU’s order — Cole McKenna, TJ Aiken and Zach Leite — combined for eight runs and three hits. Leite drove in three runs, Macaddin Dye was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs, and Cash Jay was 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.
The Monarchs (6-2) scored a run each in the first and second inning, then plated seven runs in the fourth before adding six over the next three innings.
Ryan Sheehy (1-0) and four relievers combined for a three-hitter. Myles Crocker (0-2), who yielded ODU’s first two runs, took the defeat.
The Spartans (2-5) will get a rematch March 18 at ODU.
Bridgewater 18, Christopher Newport 1: Just a day after moving into the top 25 of the D3baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association at No. 22, the host Captains (5-2) were blown out by the Eagles (8-0) in seven innings.
Jakson Walter, a freshman from Western Branch High who is one of 10 Hampton Roads players on Bridgewater’s roster, had a game he’ll never forget: three home runs and eight RBIs in five at-bats. Nick Stavros scored three runs, and Isle of Wight Academy graduate Trent Holland had four hits and three RBIs. Josh Reinhold’s single in the first brought in CNU’s run.
It was the first ranking for CNU since March 9 last year, when the Captains were No. 18.
Virginia 11, George Washington 0: A seven-run first inning set the tone for the Cavaliers (7-1) against the Revolutionaries (1-6) before 3,057 in Charlottesville. UVA is ranked 14th nationally by Baseball America and Perfect Game.
Eric Becker was 3 for 5 with a first-inning homer, a double and five RBIs, AJ Gracia was 2 for 3 with two runs, and Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI singles.
Freshman Jayden Stroman, Noah Yoder, winner Christian Lucarelli and Matt Augustin combined to pitch a seven-inning two hitter. Stroman’s older brother Marcus has been an MLB All-Star pitcher.
Apprentice 14-2, Mid-Atlantic Christian 6-6: The Builders (5-1) split a doubleheader at Hampton’s War Memorial Stadium with the Mustangs (2-8) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
In Game 1, Apprentice went ahead 8-4 with a six-run fourth and capitalized on seven MACU errors. Jett Winslow drove in three runs; he, Nate Yeary, Lucca Pascarella, Jaeden Anderson and Drew Barbosa had two hits each to support Isaac McCallister’s six innings of pitching.
In Game 2, MACU’s Colin Langley pitched a complete-game victory, scattering eight hits, including Landon Turner’s two-RBI triple in the first. The Mustangs played an errorless game, and Princess Anne High graduate Nolan Colwell had two hits and two RBIs for them. Charley Higginbotham (1-1) took the loss in a five-error game by the Builders.
Virginia Wesleyan 12, Regent 6: The host Marlins (4-3) moved ahead to stay with a three-run sixth, then took command of the first-year Royals (0-4) with a five-run seventh for a 12-4 lead. Both teams used seven pitchers.
VWU’s Gino Meienschein was 2 for 4 with three runs and an RBI, Nick Valentin was 2 for 4 with three runs, Israel Dozier drove in three runs, and Darius Walston stole three bases and drove in three runs. Ty James drew three walks and scored three runs.
For Regent, Colton Sandiford was 2 for 5 with a run and two RBIs, Jayden Alvarez and Maddox German had two hits each, and Nathan Vaughan scored twice.
