HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Old Dominion men’s winning streak ended at two Saturday with an 86-81 loss to Southern Miss, which overcame a 41-23 first-half deficit before 2,747 at Reed Green Coliseum.
KC Shaw paced ODU (10-19, 6-10 Sun Belt) with 18 points, while Jordan Battle had 17, LJ Thomas 15 and reserve Jared Turner 12 (on four 3-pointers).
Southern Miss (15-14, 8-8) only got seven points from its reserves. Tylik Weeks led the Golden Eagles with 27, while Israel Hart had 21, Isaac Taveras 16 and Djahi Binet 13. Binet grabbed nine rebounds and Taveras eight for USM, which outrebounded ODU 39-25 and shot 55%.
Those numbers enabled the Golden Eagles to overcome 26 turnovers and make the Monarchs feel their familiar frustration of squandering double-digit leads.
The Monarchs cut a 77-67 deficit to 81-79 and 83-81, but Binet clinched the victory with two free throws at the 4-second mark.
ODU will close the regular season with games at Marshall on Tuesday and Georgia State on Friday.
