ODU’s Joseph named 1 of 8 Manning Award Stars of Week

Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph was named one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week for the second time this season.

Joseph completed 17 of 30 passes for 315 yards and four touchdowns in ODU’s 47-7 victory over Coastal Carolina. He also had 66 yards on seven carries, including a 50-yard touchdown. He’s fifth in the country among quarterbacks by averaging 86.6 rush yards per game and is fifth in the country by averaging 15 yards per completion.

3 Cavaliers again capture ACC honors

For the third straight week, three Virginia Cavaliers gained weekly honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

End Mitchell Melton was the Defensive Lineman of the Week for the second consecutive time, Kam Robinson was the Linebacker of the Week, and punter Elijah Slibeck was the Specialist of the Week.

Melton had two sacks and five tackles, broke up a pass and forced a fumble. Robinson returned an interception 47 yards for a second-half touchdown and had a team-high 10 tackles (six solo), a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry. Slibeck averaged 47.4 yards on five punts, including a 71-yarder in the third quarter that pinned Louisville at the 1-yard line and led to a three-and-out.

The Cavaliers, ranked 19th by the Associated Press, are 5-1 entering a bye week, 3-0 in the ACC.

Hampton takes national HBCU award

Hampton was selected as the HBCU FCS National Team of the Week by Stats Perform following its 41-34 victory Saturday over rival Norfolk State. The Pirates overcame a 21-10 deficit with a 24-3 run spanning the second and third quarters.Meanwhile, HU defensive back Andre Jackson was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. He had a team-high 12 tackles and a sack, giving him 25 tackles for the season.

W&M’s Banbury again CAA Defensive Player of Week

William & Mary graduate linebacker Luke Banbury was selected as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. He had a career-high 17 tackles, including 3 1/2 for loss, and two sacks in the Tribe’s 38-34 victory over North Carolina A&T.

Banbury ranks second nationally in total tackles (75) and solo tackles (44).

Wilder’s Tennessee Tech team ranked 7th, 10th

Former Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder’s Tennessee Tech team climbed to seventh in the FCS coaches’ poll and 10th in the Stats Perform survey.

ODU-JMU to be on ESPNU at 3:30 Oct. 18

Old Dominion’s Oct. 18 visit to James Madison, a key game in the Sun Belt East Division race, will be a 3:30 p.m. ESPNU kickoff for the Dukes’ homecoming in Harrisonburg.

Gregorys donate $10K to Va. Peninsula CC

The Gregory Family Foundation, set up by Isle of Wight Academy graduates Andrew and Kim Gregory, made a $10,000 donation to the Virginia Peninsula Community College baseball team.

Andrew, a financial adviser, and Kim, who retired as a teacher at Hampton Roads Academy, were standouts for IWA in the mid-1990s. Their son Gavin played four years of baseball for Hampden-Sydney, and their daughter Riley played field hockey and softball in high school.

Their nephew Jake Wells is in his first year playing baseball for TNCC.

“Sports definitely were a huge part of our upbringing and what we enjoy doing,” Andrew said in a TNCC release, specifically mentioning baseball and softball. “We really appreciated the impact (those sports have) had on our lives and our kids’ lives.”

VPCC baseball coach Shane Harrison can use the money as he sees fit.

Tribe keeper captures CAA award

W&M junior goalkeeper Ryan Eapen was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week after posting two shutouts. He made three saves in a 1-0 victory over American and four in a 2-0 conference win over UNC Wilmington.

No. 16 UVA upends No. 2 NC State

A header in the 20th minute from Nick Simmonds proved to be the difference as Virginia logged its third win over a top-10 opponent this season. The No. 16 Cavaliers (7-1-2, 3-0-2 ACC) won 1-0 in Raleigh over No. 2 North Carolina State (8-1-2, 1-1-2).

ODU, Marshall tie

Old Dominion (7-1-4, 3-0-3 Sun Belt) played to a scoreless draw at Marshall (6-4-2, 2-2-2) despite outshooting the Thundering Herd 17-4 and leading Marshall 4-1 in corner kicks.

ODU’s Ellie Goodrich made one save, and the Herd’s Emma Durand had three.

TV appearances lined up for UVA

Virginia will appear on the ESPN family of channels six times this season.

The Cavaliers will be on ACC Network for home games against Longwood (7 p.m. Nov. 20), NC State (noon Jan. 25) and Virginia Tech (noon March 1). They also will be on ACCN for road games against Florida State (2 p.m. Jan. 4) and Duke (9 p.m. Jan. 15), and they’ll be on SEC Network for their ACC/SEC Challenge game at Vanderbilt (5 p.m. Dec. 3).

Captains capture conference honors

CNU swept the C2C weekly honors after beating Mary Washington 3-0, Averett 3-0 and Washington and Lee, the No. 15 team in Division III, 3-1.

Freshman Fielding Croft was the Offensive Player of the Week. She had 130 assists over that three-match span, including 60 versus W&L, plus 20 digs, three blocks and five kills during the week. She helped her team hit .316.

Junior Maddie Hanes, a Grassfield High graduate, was the Defensive Player of the Week. She averaged 4.7 digs per set in those three matches. She added eight assists and five aces during the week.

CNU sophomores race to C2C awards

Christopher Newport sophomores Andrew Janetsky and Sarah Dake were named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Runner of the Week, respectively.

Janetsky ran 8 kilometers in a team-best 25 minutes, 30.7 seconds at the 51st annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh University, shaving more than a minute off his personal record, and placed 73rd in the men’s White Division.

At the same meet, Dake set a 6K personal record of 22:27.4, the 11th-fastest time in CNU history, and was 65th in the women’s White Division.

C2C adds women’s school in Milwaukee

The C2C, whose members include CNU, Regent, Mary Washington and Salisbury, added Alverno, a women’s college in Milwaukee. The Inferno plan to begin C2C play in 2026-27 in cross country, soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and softball.

ACC hires its first Chief Revenue Officer

The ACC announced the hiring of Anthony Macri as its first Chief Revenue Officer. According to a conference release, he “will be tasked with fostering a revenue-centric mindset across the conference office and member institutions, encouraging the exploration of new lines of business and modernized go-to-market strategies.”

Macri has worked in Formula One and for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.
