ODU running back, receiver gain Sun Belt weekly awards

Old Dominion junior running back Trequan Jones was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week. He ran for 163 yards and three touchdowns on five carries Saturday in the Monarchs’ home rout of North Carolina Central.

Meanwhile, ODU wide receiver Tre’ Brown was honored as the Special Teams Player of the Week. He tackled the NCCU punter in the end zone for a safety after a bad snap and blocked a punt to set up a touchdown. He also had four catches for 74 yards.

UVA’s Ross repeats as ACC Specialist of Week

For the second week in a row, Virginia’s Cam Ross was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Specialist of the Week. He leads the ACC and is third nationally in all-purpose yards per game (182).

At NC State last Saturday, he had 81 punt-return yards (48 on one in the second quarter) and made five catches for 40 yards.

MEAC honors NSU kicker Helfrich

Norfolk State freshman kicker Evan Helfrich received MEAC Specialist of the Week honors. He made a game-ending 29-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Spartans to a 34-31 victory over Virginia State after going 4 for 4 on PAT tries.

Tribe LB Banbury gains CAA award

William & Mary linebacker Luke Banbury was named the Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week.
In the Tribe’s 28-27 comeback victory over Maine at Zable Stadium, Banbury broke up three passes and made a career-high 16 tackles.

W&M receives votes below top 25

William & Mary received four votes below the FCS coaches’ top 25, in which four of its Coastal Athletic Association rivals were ranked: No. 5 Rhode Island, No. 11 Villanova, No. 18 Monmouth and No. 24 New Hampshire.

Former Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder’s Tennessee Tech team was ranked 16th. North Dakota State was ranked first and South Dakota State second.

Richmond gained 28 poll points, which would tie the Spiders for 30th along with West Georgia.

Sept. 20 kickoff details revealed

Numerous kickoff times and broadcast platforms were announced for Sept. 20 games. Among them:

Virginia Tech’s home game against Wofford will be at noon on ACC Network Extra and ESPN+. James Madison’s game at Liberty will be at 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU. Virginia’s home contest against Stanford will be at 7:30 on ACC Network.

Regent’s Hardiman captures C2C award

Regent’s Madison Hardiman was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. She averaged 4.6 digs per set during three weekend matches in the Inaugural Royals Roundup. Her 46 total digs helped the Royals finish the weekend 3-0 and claim the title with wins over Warren Wilson, Mary Baldwin and Christendom.

CNU goalkeeper takes weekly honors

Christopher Newport goalkeeper Amy Sidaway was named the C2C Defensive Player of the Week. The Captains, ranked third in Division III, posted two shutouts — her solo effort against Mary Hardin-Baylor and a shared one against Mount St. Joseph. That gave the junior 25 solo shutouts, and she has played in eight shared shutouts.

This is the first time CNU has begun a season with four consecutive shutouts.

Hampton, Mary Baldwin players claim conference awards

Hampton freshman forward Caitlyn Peace was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. She scored three goals in a 6-0 victory over Lincoln of Pennsylvania and added HU’s first goal in Sunday’s 2-2 draw versus Delaware State.

Mary Baldwin goalkeeper Amelia Cross, from Chesapeake’s Western Branch High, was named the USA South Defender of the Week. She made nine saves in 180 minutes to help the Fighting Squirrels post a 2-0 record last week, beating Randolph 1-0 and Regent 4-0.
