Old Dominion beat Quinnipiac 15-5 Saturday in a doubleheader opener but lost 6-5 in extra innings to conclude the first series at the under-construction Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
The Monarchs went 2-1 in the series.
Christopher Newport 10-10, Southern Virginia 3-8: The Captains (3-0) swept a doubleheader against the Knights (0-2) in Newport News.
In Game 1 of a doubleheader, Cameron Slough hit a grand slam as the Captains scored six runs in the seventh inning to move ahead 9-1.
Ryan Morrison pitched five innings of four-hit ball with five strikeouts for the victory. Jake Benedict was 2 for 4 with three runs, his brother Sam was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Josh Reinhold was 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs. Slough was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
In Game 2, CNU went ahead 6-0 with a six-run third inning, then fended off an SVU rally. Aaron Maxie was 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBIs. Jacob Koenig was 2 for 2 and scored twice, and Brayden Mazzoni had a double and three RBIs. CNU starter Cooper Newell, a Hickory High graduate, gave up two runs and three hits in five innings, and four relievers combined to pitch the final four innings.
Towson 12, Norfolk State 3 (Game 1): The Tigers leveled the series at a victory apiece by winning a doubleheader opener after being shut out in Friday’s 2-0 NSU victory.
Methodist 11, Virginia Wesleyan 4: After Friday’s doubleheader split, the Monarchs took a series victory in Fayetteville, North Carolina, over the Marlins (1-2).
Israel Dozier was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI for VWU, which trailed 8-0 after five innings. Methodist starter Michael Heis pitched six shutout innings, striking out six and yielding three hits and a walk.
Virginia 25, Wagner 10 (Game 1): The Cavaliers pounded the Seahawks’ pitching staff to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Joe Tiroly’s two-run single, Noah Jouras’ second-inning home run off the clubhouse beyond the fence in left-center field and Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick’s RBI double to right in the third were among the early highlights.
Virginia Tech 8-8, William & Mary 7-2: The Hokies won a doubleheader to complete a three-game sweep of the Tribe in Blacksburg.
