ODU sweeps doubleheader vs. Niagara, improves to 5-2 in baseball

Old Dominion came from behind in both games to beat Niagara 8-5 and 5-4 in a doubleheader Saturday at Ellmer Family Baseball Complex, improving the Monarchs to 5-2.

In Game 1, JJ Gatti pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and TJ Aiken and Zach Leite each had two hits and two RBIs. Jack Slater went 3 for 5 with a run and Will Johnson homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Monarchs.

In Game 2, the Purple Eagles (0-6) went ahead 4-0 but couldn’t hold the lead. Aiken and Maverick Stallings hit RBI singles and Tyler Zedalis hit a sacrifice fly to put ODU ahead 5-4. All three of them had two hits in the contest.

With the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, freshman Charlie Pearce induced a strikeout and a flyout to end the game.

William & Mary 10-5, Binghamton 5-4: Jamie Laskofski was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs for the Tribe (2-4) as it won a doubleheader opener, paving the way to a sweep of the Bearcats (1-5) at Plumeri Park. Witt Scafidi, at the bottom of the lineup, was 4 for 5 and scored twice.

W&M went ahead to stay, 5-3, with a two-run fifth. Charlie Iriotakis was 2 for 4 with two runs, and Charlie Seneker got the victory by holding Binghamton to three hits and a run in four innings.

In Game 2, Matthew Kosuda had two hits and two RBIs. His sacrifice fly drove in Jackson Woolwine with the eventual winning run in the seventh.

W&M grabbed a 4-0 lead in the third inning as starter Tom Bourque held the Bearcats scoreless for four innings. The Bearcats pulled even, but W&M reliever Noah Hertzler pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.

Virginia Tech 9, Rutgers 8, 10 innings: Hudson Lutterman, Sam Grube and freshman Ethan Ball hit home runs in the 10th inning to power the Hokies to a wild, come-from-behind victory in Blacksburg to square their series at a victory apiece.

Tech (5-1) overcame deficits of 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth and 8-5 beginning the bottom of the 10th.

Stetson 6, Virginia 5: Despite only four hits, the host Hatters (2-5) edged the Cavaliers (5-1) in DeLand, Florida, on Samuel Fernandez’s double to deep center in the hninth.

Joe Tiroly hit a three-run homer for UVA, and RJ Holmes hit a solo homer. Western Branch High alumna Harrison Didawick singled and scored in the sixth.

Christopher Newport 17, Cortland 5: The Captains (5-1) earned a mercy-rule victory against nationally ranked Cortland (1-2) at the D3 Showcase at First National Bank Field, home of the minor league Greensboro Grasshoppers. Junior first baseman Aaron Maxie rapped a career-high five hits, including three doubles, to drive in five runs for the second straight game.

The Captains scored 10 runs in the first three innings to pull away from the Red Dragons.

SUNY New Paltz 18-3, Virginia Wesleyan 8-4: Nathan Bryant’s double down the left-field line scored Israel Dozier with the winning run in Game 2’s bottom of the ninth, giving the Marlins a doubleheader split for two victories in the three-game series at Perry Field in Virginia Beach.

Gino Meinschein was 2 for 4 and scored twice in the game. Matthew Weber (2-0) pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings in relief of Chase Depalma for the victory despite giving up a run.

In Game 1, Wallace Kirkpatrick and Johnny McHugh each had three hits and four RBIs for the Hawks. Dozier went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Nick Valentin added two hits, two runs and an RBI for VWU.

New Paltz Game 1 starting pitcher Connor Catania allowed three runs — two earned — on three hits in four innings. Reliever Dylan Hayes (1-0) picked up the victory with 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Apprentice 3-3, Southern Virginia 2-2: The Builders improved to 4-0 with a pair of victories over the Knights at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

Jaeden Anderson clubbed a walk-off home run in the ninth inning of Game 1. Grant Stratton (1-0) got the win with five innings of relief.

In Game 2, RBI singles by Landon Turner, Isaac McCallister and Seth Harrison gave the Builders a three-run lead. Winner Nick Redman (2-0) struck out six in six innings, and Charley Higginbotham earned a save.

Allegheny 14-10, Regent 9-2: The first-year Royals (0-4) dropped a home doubleheader at Landstown High to a team from Meadville, Pennsylvania.

In Game 1, the Royals’ Ethan Loucks was 3 for 4 and scored twice, while Jayden Alvarez had two hits and drove in two runs. In Game 2, Alvarez had two hits, a run and an RBI.
