ODU women turn back East Carolina for fourth consecutive victory

Old Dominion registered its fourth consecutive victory, avenging a home loss last season by defeating East Carolina 73-67 at Williams Arena in Greenville, North Carolina.

An Education Day crowd of 5,432 saw the Monarchs (4-1) move ahead of the Pirates (2-3) by as many as 17 points. Simone Cunningham had 23 points and nine rebounds, while En’Dya Buford had 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals and six assists. Nevaeh Scott had eight points, three rebounds and three assists, and Simaru Fields had nine points.

ECU lost despite a huge game from graduate student Anzhané Hutton, who had a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds. Former Hampton High and Smithfield player Jayla Hearp and Kennedy Fauntleroy added nine points apiece, and Savannah Brooks had eight points and eight rebounds.

The Pirates whittled ODU’s lead to five in the final minute, but the Monarchs put the game away.

Bob Jones 72, Regent 46: The Bruins, from Greenville, South Carolina, outplayed the Royals (0-5) despite Eva Giannini’s 15 points and My’Angel Carter’s 11.

Jenna Brooks and Anna Layne Wylder led Bob Jones with 17 points apiece.

No. 1 Connecticut 72, No. 6 Michigan 69: Azzi Fudd scored 31 points and Sarah Strong added 16 points and 20 rebounds for the Huskies (5-0) in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The Wolverines (4-1) rallied to 70-69 on a 3-pointer by Syla Swords with about 12 seconds left. Fudd then hit two more free throws with less than eight seconds left and Michigan couldn’t get a final shot off to tie it.

Swords finished with 29 points and Olivia Olson added 18 for the Wolverines.

No. 24 Notre Dame 61, No. 11 Southern California 59: Hannah Hidalgo scored 22 points and hit the go-ahead jumper with 1.9 seconds left, KK Bransford scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter, and Notre Dame (4-1) won at home.

Kara Dunn hit four 3-pointers and led USC (3-2) with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
