Simaru Fields made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining at Kaplan Arena, giving Old Dominion (3-1) a 56-53 victory Sunday at William & Mary (1-3).
Cassidy Geddes’ jumper with 2:30 on the clock put the Tribe ahead 53-51, but Simone Cunningham sank two free throws to tie the score. After Fields’ shot, Geddes missed just before the clock expired.
“We had to grind this game out,” Monarchs coach DeLisha Milton-Jones said on odusports.com. “We’re still trying to gel and figure some things out as a new team, while we present ourselves differently every single game. But for us to still be able to come out with wins and scrap our way through it, that really shows me a lot about how good we really can be.”
ODU led for most of the first three quarters, but W&M led 43-39 entering the fourth.
“The most dangerous part about William & Mary is their ability to shoot the 3,” said Milton-Jones, whose team held the Tribe to 2-of-18 shooting beyond the arc.
Fields scored 18 and En’Dya Buford 17 for ODU, and Riley Stack had eight rebounds and six points. Jana Sallman led the Tribe with 14 points and eight rebounds.
No. 16 Iowa State 98, Norfolk State 52: Addy Brown had 11 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, Audi Crook and Alisa Williams had double-doubles, and the Cyclones beat the Spartans (2-3) in Ames, Iowa.
Crooks had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Williams added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Cyclones.
Jasha Clinton had 19 points for the Spartans (2-3), who shot 30% (17 of 54) and were outrebounded 53-24. Arianna Jackson had two 3-pointers and Williams and Harris also connected from deep in a 14-0 run that gave the Cyclones an 18-7 lead.
Gardner-Webb 55, Hampton 35: Kiki McElrath had 12 points, including six in the final quarter, but the Pirates (1-2) couldn’t overcome 21.2% shooting from the field as they lost to the Runnin’ Bulldogs (1-4) in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Amina Gray scored 18 points for Gardner-Webb, including 13 in a fourth quarter during which she sank four 3-pointers.
Johns Hopkins 59, Christopher Newport 38: The Captains (2-2), ranked 20th in the d3hoops.com preseason poll, incurred their second loss at the Bridgewater Invitational in two days, falling to the No. 8 Bluejays (5-0).
CNU shot 23.7% (14 of 59) and was led by Elizabeth Creed and Sydney Worsham with six points apiece. Hopkins’ Macie Feldman had 14 rebounds and seven assists, and teammates Grace Soltes and Jocelyn Goldstein had 10 points each.
Bryant & Stratton 64, Guilford Technical CC 44: The Bobcats (6-0), ranked 23rd in National Junior College Athletic Association Division II, won in North Carolina behind Sian Lewin’s 22 points, Sania Johnson’s 14 points and Hailey Harris’ 11 points. Myla Parker grabbed 10 rebounds.
Washington and Lee 80, Virginia Wesleyan 57: The Generals (5-0), ranked sixth by d3hoops.com, handled the Marlins (3-1) for the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament championship despite Brianna Long’s 14 points and 18 rebounds. W&L’s Mary Schleusner had 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Villanova 84, James Madison 73: Brynn McCurry had 18 points and seven assists as the Wildcats (3-2) overcame the Dukes (3-2) in Harrisonburg, hitting 12 3-pointers to JMU’s four.
Peyton McDaniel scored 23 and Bree Robinson 22 for JMU. Lake Taylor High product Ashanti Barnes had eight points and seven rebounds.
Virginia 77, Radford 46: UVA (3-1) outrebounded the Highlanders 48-19 in Charlottesville, including 20 offensive rebounds that led to 28 second-chance points. Cavaliers forward Tabitha Amanze led all players with 21 points, on 8-of-13 shooting, and 12 rebounds.
For Radford (2-3), Cate Carlson, a former Catholic and W&M player, had nine points and three rebounds off the bench.
No. 1 Connecticut 100, Ohio State 68: Sarah Strong had 29 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks as the Huskies (4-0) dominated the Buckeyes (2-1) in Hartford. Azzi Fudd added 19 points and seven assists for UConn. Jaloni Cambridge had 17 points and six rebounds for Ohio State.
No. 6 Oklahoma 95, Western Carolina 32: Raegan Beers posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Sooners (4-1) against the Catamounts (2-2) in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Aaliyah Chavez tallied 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Taj Hunter led WCU with 12 points.
No. 7 Baylor 99, Le Moyne 43: Darianna Littlepage-Buggs had 26 points and 11 rebounds, Bella Fontleroy added 21 points for the host Bears (4-0), and Auburn transfer Taliah Scott finished with 20 points and nine assists. Peyton Dincher led Le Moyne (1-2), located in Syracuse, New York, with 11 points.
No. 9 Maryland 84, Princeton 68: Sara Oluchi Okananwa scored 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, Saylor Poffenbarger added 19 and the Terrapins (5-0) never trailed at home against the Tigers (2-1).
No. 17 TCU 69, No. 10 NC State 59: Marta Suarez scored 26 points as TCU (4-0) passed its first major challenge of the season by beating the Wolfpack (2-2) in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Olivia Miles, a transfer from Notre Dame, finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Horned Frogs. Tilda Trygger scored 15 and Destiny Lunan 10 points for NC State.
No. 15 Duke 71, Liberty 57: Toby Fournier scored 18 points, Ashlon Jackson added 16 and the Blue Devils (3-2) won in Lynchburg. Emmy Stout scored 21 points for the Flames (2-2).

Bryant & Stratton 75, Brunswick Community College 57: Sian Lewis had 19 points, four rebounds and two assists, Myla Parker scored 14 points and Sanai Johnson had 12 points for BSC in Atlantic Shores’ gym.
William Peace 75, Apprentice 61: The Pacers (2-1) took control late in the second quarter at home in Raleigh, North Carolina.Zikira Henderson and Amiah Griffin scored 17 apiece for William Peace. Ronnice Berry led Apprentice (2-2) with 20 points, while Shilah-Ray Lord added 10.
Pfeiffer 80, Regent 43: The Royals (0-4) lost in Misenheimer, North Carolina, though freshmen Kennedy Shipman and Amara Groth finished with 15 points each. The Falcons (2-1) outscored Regent 30-2 in the fourth quarter and nearly got a quadruple-double from Miya Horton: nine points, nine steals, seven rebounds and eight assists.
Bridgewater 71, Christopher Newport 65: The Captains shot 35.6% and lost to the Eagles at the Bridgewater Invitational, though sophomore Madison McKenzie scored a career-high 19 points.
Sarah Pritz and Sydney Worsham each scored 10 for CNU, which led 48-36 before hitting a drought. Bridgewater moved ahead 71-59.
Riley Corcoran had 21 points and four steals for the Eagles, who overcame 31 turnovers.
Virginia Wesleyan 68, Marymount 54: Brianna Long had 28 points and 15 rebounds as the Marlins downed the Saints in the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament. Also for VWU, Maesyn Blaylock had 12 points and five steals, and Jaiden Hunter had 11 points and eight rebounds.
