Ohio State earns split with UConn men’s hockey in 4-2 win

Just 17 seconds after UConn’s Ryan Tattle tied the game, Ohio State’s Riley Thompson put his team back on top as the No. 16 Buckeyes held on for a 4-2 win on Saturday night at PeoplesBank Arena, splitting the two-game series between two teams in the top 20.

The No. 12 Huskies won Friday’s opener, played in Storrs, 3-2.

Joey Muldowney opened the scoring, giving UConn (2-2-0) a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal just 35 seconds into the second period. Ohio State answered with a Max Montes goal at 5:03 of the period and went ahead on a Jake Dunlap goal at 17:06. Both Montes and Thompson also had goals on Friday night.

The teams battled through most of the final period before Tattle beat Buckeyes goaltender Kris Eberly at 14:17. Just moments later, at 14:35, Thompson got by Huskies freshman Kam Hendrickson for the winner. James Hong closed out the scoring with an empty-netter at 18:46.

Eberly had 34 saves in net for the Buckeyes (2-2-0), while Hendrickson stopped 26 shots for the Huskies.

On Friday, Tyler Muszelik made 32 saves — 14 in the third period — in the Huskies’ win at Toscano Family Ice Forum. Mike Murtagh got UConn on the board first with a goal at 8:15 of the opening period. Montes even things up, beating Muszelik at 18:17 before UConn grabbed the lead back with a two-goal second period as Kevin Fitzgerald and Tristan Fraser scored

UConn is back in action again on Friday night at Boston University in a Hockey East home-and-home. The Huskies and Terriers play in Storrs on Saturday.
