One person is dead following a two-alarm fire late Monday at a multi-family home in Hartford that displaced nine people.
Firefighters responded to the 2 ½ story home on Elliott Street at 10:35 p.m. and encountered heavy fire conditions on the first floor when they got to the scene, according to the Hartford Fire Department.
The flames had already extended to the second floor and roof area, leading to a second alarm being called in for additional crews, fire officials said. Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze and bring it under control after deploying multiple hose lines.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to fire officials. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification to their family.
“The Hartford Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic incident,” the fire department said in a statement.
A man who suffered possible smoke inhalation was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated and released, fire officials said.
The fire left nine adults temporarily without a home, according to fire officials. They are receiving assistance from the Hartford Fire Department Special Services Unit and the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office, the Hartford Police Department and the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
