A shorthanded Orlando City had its hands full against the high-flying Vancouver Whitecaps, ultimately falling 2-1 at home on Saturday night to the Canadian side.
“Frustrating. I can say I felt like we were defending for a very long time. That’s something I mean to look at,” Lions defender Dagur Dan Thorhallsson said. “I don’t know why we scored, and we just dropped down and defended for almost the rest of the game. We counterattacked, yeah, but we need to keep the ball a little bit more, especially against these quality teams with quality players.”
Orlando City took the lead in the first half, but a late mistake allowed Vancouver to get back into the match before a last-minute winner for the Whitecaps sealed the deal.
Lions captain Robin Jansson went down with an injury in the 12th minute, grabbing at his knee as he went to the ground. The Swedish defender tried to test it out on the sideline but was unable to return to play, and his status for the rest of the season was unknown.
Orlando City brought on Duncan McGuire, and it didn’t take long for him to get involved in the offense. Martin Ojeda crossed the ball to an unmarked McGuire, who played a great pass to Thorhallsson in front of goal. Thorhallsson coolly shot it past goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka to put the Lions up 1-0 in the 24th minute.
Vancouver found a way back into the game in the 81st minute thanks to a gifted goal from Orlando City. Sebastian Berhalter’s shot hit the post, and Kyle Smith’s attempted clearance hit Vancouver forward Nelson Pierre and deflected past Pedro Gallese to even the score at 1-1.
The Whitecaps found their winner in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time after Orlando’s defense was unable to close down Thomas Müller. Gallese got his fingers on the ball but was unable to keep out the shot.
“They just were very intense throughout the whole game,” Thorhallsson added. “It’s also something we need to do better that when teams actually come really high in pressing that we need to be able to be calm on the ball and keep it a little bit better.”
Orlando City’s last game of the season is on the road against Toronto FC on MLS Decision Day.
