Oscar Smith’s Johnson, Scott gain top Class 6 honors
Oscar Smith senior wide receiver Travis Johnson was named the VHSL state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year, and the Tigers’ Chris Scott was named the Coach of the Year after guiding Oscar Smith to its second straight title and the fourth in his tenure.
Johnson, committed to Michigan, caught 56 passes for 1,157 yards and 15 touchdowns in his second straight all-state year.Johnson was joined on the first team by seven fellow Tigers: junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis.
The second team included senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis at linebacker.

ODU gaining, losing in portal plans
Old Dominion starting tight end Jailen Butler intends to enter the transfer portal, his representative told Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.
The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder has 21 starts, 18 career catches for 103 yards and one TD. He joined quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones in planning to go to the portal.
Meanwhile, though, the Monarchs gained a commitment from Hunter Patterson, a running back who will transfer from Division II West Liberty, according to 247 Sports’ Chris Hummer. He ran for 1,219 yards and 17 touchdowns on 174 carries and caught 33 passes for 418 yards and three TDs for a 3-8 team.

2 CNU players are Scholar All-Region
A pair of Christopher Newport players earned the distinction of Scholar All-Region. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton, from Gloucester, and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway were among 10 players to earn Scholar All-South Region honors. Heaton was a repeat selection to the first team.
The Scholar All-Region selections for Sidaway and Heaton extend a program-record streak to eight consecutive years with at least one player recognized for her accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom.
The award is distributed to players competing as juniors or above with at least a 3.40 cumulative grade-point average while playing a minimum of 75% of games.
