The state attorney general’s office is taking over the prosecution of two Allentown police officers charged with sex crimes from the Lehigh County district attorney’s office.
A spokesperson for Lehigh County DA Gavin Holihan said there was a potential conflict of interest in that office’s prosecution of Allentown police Sgt. Evan Weaver and former officer Jason Krasley.
“There was a potential conflict of interest in our office and when those issues arise, in full transparency, we ask an outside agency to determine if a conflict of interest exists,” the spokesperson said.
Attorney General Dave Sunday’s office accepted that request and will prosecute the cases, according to the statement.
In one case, Krasley and Weaver are accused of forcing a woman to perform sex acts. After a preliminary hearing in April, most of the charges in that case were bound over for trial in Lehigh County Court of Common Pleas. Charges of involuntary sexual servitude against both men and one count of kidnapping against Weaver were dismissed.
Weaver was placed on administrative leave in January after the charges in that case were announced.
Krasley, a former vice officer who retired in 2021, also is charged in other cases with raping multiple women while investigating prostitution. He is also accused of stealing more than $5,000 during a drug investigation in 2019.
A status conference in the theft case against Krasley is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
