Pa. Turnpike I-476 to close in Lehigh Valley over weekend

Another closure on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension in the Lehigh Valley is scheduled for this weekend.

Interstate 476 northbound will be closed early Sunday morning in Lehigh and Bucks counties for an ongoing bridge replacement project, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said in a news release.

The highway is scheduled to be shut down from midnight until 6 a.m. between the Quakertown and Lehigh Valley interchanges. Southbound traffic will not be affected, according to the turnpike commission.

The closure will allow for demolition work and for beams to be installed as part of the Tilghman Street overpass replacement project. The overpass is being replaced to allow for future widening of the Turnpike below.

While the turnpike’s northbound lanes are closed early Sunday, the following detour is being recommended:

At Quakertown interchange, follow Route 663 North 3.3 miles

Route 309 North for 9.3 miles
Interstate 78 West for 6.3 miles
Route 309 North for 1.0 miles
Route 22 West for 1.1 miles
Re-enter Turnpike at Lehigh Valley interchange

State police and turnpike workers will be stationed near the interchanges to assist motorists. The work could be delayed based on weather conditions.
