FOXBOROUGH — The win streak is over for the Jets.
Drake Maye continued his MVP campaign for the Patriots after throwing for 281 yards and one touchdown as the Patriots (9-2) defeated the Jets (2-8) 27-14 on Thursday Night Football at Gillette Stadium.
Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson finished with 93 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns for New England. The loss ended the Jets two-game winning streak after the team began the season 0-7.
“That is a well-coached team that has a quarterback that’s playing really well,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “Defensively they did a really good job and we got to do a better job just across the board.
“I’m just talking coaches and players that we got to do a better job of. We have this mini break that we have. We’ll come back on Monday and get to work and have an extra bonus day to get some work in.”
Bad offense and bad defense have consistently been the themes for the Jets throughout this season. That would continue against New England, which has now won eight consecutive games.
Justin Fields ended the night completing 15-of-26 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 67 yards on 11 attempts.
Breece Hall, who was terrific against Cleveland in Week 9, registered 58 rushing yards and was held without a touchdown in another poor offensive night for the Jets. He also only had two catches for six yards.
“It was really on us not making plays,” Hall said about the offense. “I felt like Justin played his tail off today. He put the ball out there, we just gotta do a better job of making plays for him.
“Not every ball is gonna be perfect. Not every situation is going to be ideal, but at the end of the day, you still have to find a way to make a play. I feel like as a skill group, we gotta do a better job of making it easier for our O-line and our quarterback.”
Fields was once again hesitant to throw the ball down the field. He was also at times holding the ball too long inside the pocket and was largely inaccurate. This has continued to be a significant issue for the Jets this season, to the extent that their owner, Woody Johnson, blamed Fields for the team’s 0-7 start to the season.
After some speculation about whether he could get benched, Fields once again started at quarterback for the Jets. He also struggled against the Browns last week after completing 6-of-11 passes for 54 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Fields and the Jets had a flawless first drive to begin the night. They converted all of their fourth downs, and Fields scored on a five-yard touchdown run, which gave the Jets an early 7-0 lead. Out of the 72 yards they gained on that drive, 56 of them were achieved on the ground.
It was the first time the Jets scored on their opening drive since Week 16 last season against the Rams. However, their offense stalled following that drive, and they only scored seven more points for the rest of the night.
Gang Green went three and out on its following three drives and gained a total of 21 yards combined for the rest of the first half. Fields completed just 4-of-7 passes for 23 yards with a touchdown run at the halftime break. The Jets also had 93 net yards of offense during the first 30 minutes.
This was the sixth time this season the Jets recorded less than 100 yards at halftime, according to the Amazon broadcast. That is the most in the NFL this season. But unlike the Week 7 game against the Panthers in which Tyrod Taylor came in at quarterback after halftime, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn stuck with Fields, but the results remained the same.
“I’m sure there are some things Justin is going to say I could have done better, could have made some plays,” Glenn said. “Then again, there are some plays out there our guys got make for him also, and you’ll be able to see that as you go back and watch the tape.
“We’re all accountable for that as far as coaches. Make sure we put our guys in the right position. The receivers, make sure they catch the ball. I thought he had some really good throws. We just got to finish those.”
The Jets were without star wide receiver Garrett Wilson for the third time this season. He injured his knee against the Browns and landed on injured reserve hours before kickoff.
That means Wilson will be out for at least four games. This is the same knee that Wilson injured against the Broncos, which caused him to miss two games before returning against Cleveland.
The Jets are also without No. 2 receiver Josh Reynolds, who is also on IR because of a hip injury.
“It’s a big blow,” Fields said about missing Wilson. “It’s our circumstances, so it is what it is. These guys are going to continue getting [opportunities] and you know we’re just gotta keep building.”
Adonai Mitchell, who was acquired in the trade for Sauce Gardner over a week ago, played in his first game with Gang Green, but a few catches went through his hands. He had one completion for 10 yards in his first game with the Jets.
In the second quarter, Fields threw a perfect pass to Mitchell down near the red zone, but the ball slipped through the receiver’s hands. Later in Jets territory, Mitchell was wide open, but Fields overthrew him near the sideline and the pass went incomplete.
“If I can get it back, I would go up and attack the ball instead of letting it come down,” Mitchell said about his missed opportunity in the second quarter. “I misjudged the ball and at the end of the day, I gotta be better on that. It was a great pass, so it should have been an explosive.”
Following a Patriots third-quarter touchdown, Fields and the Jets had their best drive since the first quarter. Fields was decisive and completed five of his six passes on the drive, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie III, which was the second score of his NFL career. That trimmed the Patriots’ lead to 21-14.
But down 24-14 with 7:34 remaining, center Josh Myers had a low snap of the ball, and instead of just falling on it, Fields tried to pick it up. However, the Patriots’ linebacker, Anfernee Jennings, recovered the ball on the Jets’ 11-yard line. However, the Patriots only managed a field goal out of it, which increased their lead to 27-14, and that was enough to put the game out of reach.
As inept as their offense was against the Patriots, the Jets defense couldn’t stop a nosebleed. Maye carved up the Jets secondary all night as Patriot fans were chanting MVP a lot of the night. Jets defenders often left Patriots receivers wide open. Stefon Diggs torched the Jets defense after finishing with nine catches for 105 yards.
Gang Green’s secondary was shorthanded after cornerback Azareye’h Thomas was ruled out due to being in concussion protocol. Safety Andre Cisco is also out for the season after tearing his pectoral.
Additionally, the Jets’ defense struggled to slow down Henderson. He scored two first-half touchdowns on the ground and added a receiving touchdown in the third quarter.
New England’s offense finished with 336 yards, with 271 coming through the air. The Jets defense, which was a top-five unit the previous three seasons, has struggled under Glenn and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Coming into Thursday night, the Jets were 19th in yards and 26th in points allowed.
Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. had a dreadful night after finishing with three defensive penalties. He also allowed Patriots receiver Pop Douglas to catch the ball, fall down, and continue running 20-plus yards after Brownlee did not place a hand on him while on the ground.
“We didn’t play to our standard,” Brownlee said. A lot of miscommunication out there, guys are not on the same page.”
The Jets will have 10 days between their next game, which will be at Baltimore on Nov. 23.
